Left 4 Dead computer help Thread

CharlesVICharlesVI Registered User regular
Hello and thanks for reading!

I am making this post because I have a dillema, I would like to play Left 4 dead with my wonderful wife but I am poor. So here I am with limited resorces trying to make a frankenstein computer with what I have spending as little as possible.

What I have:
Monitor - works fine.
Keyboard - sucks.
Mouse - Trackball
Dell Dimension 2400 - working with new HD
1G Ram - pretty nice OCZ 3200 speed or so, probally running slow b/c I cant figure out how to up its voltage on the dell.
Graphics card - Nvidia GeforceFX 5200

This is what I Have and it almost works. It loads but the graphics set to the lowest are a bit insane. Anyhow assume I know not enough to do anything clever to get around this software wise either I would greatly appriciate help in the terms of what I must Buy or Do in order to play left 4 dead on this (or another) computer for the lowest price possible.

Thank you!

What kind of budget do you have? A good optical mouse and keyboard can be found for less than 10 dollars each. If you're running a GeforceFX 5200, I'm guessing you have an AGP graphics slot. Unfortunately, this severely limits your upgrade options, and you might need to get a new computer if you want better performance.

Do you have one computer capable of running L4D? From your post it's unclear whether this is a second PC build so your wife can run it separately or not.

If you have a computer that can run L4D, then just use the split-screen mode. Problem solved.

IIRC, the Dimension 2400s are P4 systems. You're probably at the point of "Fuck it, buy a new one" honestly.

As DHS said, if the main machine can run L4D well enough, buy a wired 360 controller and play split-screen.

Alternatively you can try lowering the directX level, assuming you haven't already done that.

L4D requires DX9 for certain engine effects, you can't gimp it down like TF2 for older rigs.

Ah, well I'll be damned. (I've only ever done it on TF2, but I assumed it was a valve constant).
