Hey, all. I'm steadily running out of films to shove in my Netflix queue (once they receive my movie on Monday they'll be sending me out the last item in my queue on Tuesday). These are the kinds of things I like:
-well done period pieces
-well humored romantic comedies (Forgetting Sarah Marshall being one of my favorite films)
-decent war or action flicks, from any period
-interesting documentaries
-comedies!
Here are some of my favorite films: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Patriot, The Last Samurai, Gladiator, the Adam McKay directed Will Ferrel movies, PS I Love You, The Bourne trilogy...
Thanks!

Have you watched the other Judd Apatow movies? 40 year old Virgin is one of my favorite romcoms.
I've seen 40 Year Old Virgin. Wiki'ing Judd Apatow shows me that the movies of his I haven't seen are: Kicking & Screaming, Drillbit Taylor, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
Any of these good?

Zohan is the only one I've seen; it's a pretty funny action spoof.
Just got finished watching Zack and Miri make a Porn. Pretty good romantic comedy. Think Kevin Smith aping Judd Apatow(though really Apatow aped Smith first)
In addition to all the documentaries mentioned by Tycho in his news post, I'd say these:
Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, The Fifth Element, Sunset Boulevard, Dr. Strangelove OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, War Games (this is an 80s period piece ), Shaun of the Dead, Time Bandits, Rush Hour, Blazing Saddles, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!, The Hunt for Red October, Men in Black, Willow, Sleeper, Ratatouille, The Third Man, American Graffiti, Harold and Maude, Young Frankenstein, Annie Hall, Hot Fuzz, Casablanca, Beverly Hills Cop, A Boy And His Dog, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Iron Man, The Departed, Rear Window, This is Spinal Tap, Best of Show, Life of Brian, Death at a Funeral, The Princess Bride, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Ghostbusters, Manhattan
These all fit in to one of your categories. I could break them down by genre if you want but I assure you that they're all awesome.
This can't be recommended strongly enough. It might not be everyones cup of tea, but everyone has to at least watch it once.

Another recommendation for the Shawshank Redemption. Even if you don't like prison movies at all, you should watch it. It's really an instance where a bunch of fairly average pieces combine to make something that is immeasurably greater than the sum of all the parts.
Braveheart and Letters from Iwo Jima are excellent war/period films.
Well done period pieces: Barry Lyndon
Well humored romantic comedies: Annie Hall
Decent war or action flicks, from any period: The Grand Illusion (not really an action movie, but a great film set in WW1)
Interesting documentaries: Dark Days
Comedies!: Love and Death

Some foreign language selections for you: Amelie (which is sort of like a romantic comedy) and City of God (which doesn't really fit neatly into any of your categories, although I suppose you could argue it as being a period peice).

Seconding City of God. Such a fantastic movie even if it's not your usual cup of tea.

The Sting - one of the definitive con-men movies, and a period piece to boot. If you liked Ocean's 11, check this out. Even if you didn't like Ocean's 11, this has Paul Newman and Robert Redford so what the hell are you waiting for?!

Man on Wire. I'm so used to the instant stream that I'm pissed some of the good Herzog stuff isn't there like Grizzly Man. It's there for USPS though I believe.

Romantic comedy: Down With Love, Amelie, Chasing Amy
Action: Ronin, Smokin' Aces
Period/war: The Last Samurai, The Thin Red Line
I second Das Boot. I recommend On the Waterfront to everyone because everybody should see it. Comic Book Superheros Unmasked and the Pixar Story (this one is an instant watch too) are fun docs. Pixar Short Fils Vol 1 is a good watch. Spaceballs is a watch instantly. Clue, Cry Baby and Haur Spray are all there.
