2-Night Event - Sundays, Feb 8th & 15th at 9/8c
Tonight is the premiere of the XIII movie, based on this game:
(Well actually it's based on the comic book but who's checking?)
The game was a cel-shaded first person shooter, very cinematic for its time, with panels appearing for certain kills and visual onomatopoeias to mimic the comic book experience. The plot revolves around an amnesiac,
accused of being involved in a plot to assassinate the President, and he's being hunted down by this guy:
No, not David Hasslehoff.
Not Gary Coleman either.
Unfortunately.
This is the first time that a video game movie is direct-to-TV. Not even the Uwe Boll movies have that distinct honor.
Unfortunately.
But maybe this one might be good, and could pave the way for more low-budget but true-to-source adaptations of video game movies. We may finally see movies that would never have a chance if it was pitched for theatres.
What do you think? Will you be catching XIII tonight?
I will, but I will be missing the sultry voice of David Duchovny.
Posts
But yeah, like you said, based on the same book as the game. Also Bourne Identity is based on the book too. So the plots are similar.

Sigh.
I'm hoping

And Duchovny should never ever do voice work ever again. Ever.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.

Oh god yes, The Mayor is the funniest thing in family guy.
Is it based on the game or based on the comics that the game is also based on?

That's pretty cool, what part?
I just finished tonight's half of the movie. Holy shit, it was surprisingly good.
Well, a few forgivable movie cliche flaws here and there that require some suspension of disbelief, but they kept the tension tight and they had the right atmosphere throughout. It was a bit slow and choppy in the beginning (after he was Nailin' Palin :winky: ), but it pulled off enough quality to match Bourne...for a TV movie.
For a TV movie based on a videogame. That's impressive.
Note that this was back in a time when celshading was fairly new, and thus using it was a big deal. For some games, just introducing it to a new genre was the major selling point.
Seriously, I think this is reaching to consider this video game related
Hell, I'm sure the only reason it got greenlit was because it was based off a comic book and comic book movies are all the rage these days
And by the way: Val Kilmer is doing direct-to-tv movies now?
That's so sad

All I'm saying is that he used to be in movies like Tombstone and Spartan, giving performances ranging from solid to downright incredible, and now he's starring in a made-for-tv movie on NBC
I like Val Kilmer and he deserves better

I worked on a small montage of tv news channels, news paper pages and web pages.
Pretty much. Calling this a videogame movie is like calling The Dark Knight a videogame movie, because, you know, there've been Batman games before, right?
Though this does remind me that I've been meaning to pick up the game for a long-ass time now.
And hot diggiiy! $6.98 shipped and sealed from Amazon!
As long as it isn't Max Payne.
Ever.

What do you have against Val?

Nice one.
I hear that about a lot of stars.
The movie.. uh... it was ok, I guess. Not good, but not bad. I'll watch the second part next week.

I figure the movie should be done in the style of Renaissance or rotoscoped like that Scanner Darkly.

It's on hulu if anyone's interested.
I was always intrigued by the game, but somehow never got around to it. They should put it on XBox Originals.
The plot seemed like it would not be a bad movie, and since I'm okay with Val Kilmer for the most part, I PVRed it. I have a new baby, so I haven't got to it yet, but I'm expecting mild, unforgettable entertainment.
