DVD player hates shows, loves movies, WTF?

The title describes it fairly well. I've got an old (bought it in 2003 or thereabouts) Sony 5-disc dvd player (can acquire the exact model # if needed). It has no problems playing movies. Stick one in and it works fine! Sweet!
But let's say I throw in a dvd of a tv series. Say it's The Wire or How I Met Your Mother or Lost. The dvd player does not like that, not one bit! Typically a series disc is accompanied by a grinding noise from the player, and video playback is sporadic. Sometimes it works fine; sometimes it starts to work fine but then quickly during an episode it starts to stutter and then it stops completely. Sometimes it can't even get through the main menu without freezing.
So what the hell is going on? I don't understand why movies work fine, while shows have a definitely tendency to fail. The grinding noise I mentioned makes me think something is failing in the dvd player, but that noise doesn't happen when playing movies.
So, H/A, what the hell is up with my dvd player?

The only thing I can think of is that the shows you're watching have a lot of nested menus. The wire has like, 3 menus before you get to the movie, and each has separate scenes.
My parent's DVD player could do everything, also a 5 disk, and then stopped playing CDs, also in a sporadic manner. As you can probably guess, it then progressed to DVD-Rs and then to regular DVD movies (they don't watch tv shows on DVD). It was on its way out -- yours might be doing the same, unless it's always done that.
