Nervous to buy a calculus textbook ahead of time: Solved
Okay, so I want to get a head start on my calculus course that I am taking in the summer next year - I want to buy James Stewart's Calculus 6th edition and read it ahead of time so that the class will be just doing homework.
However, i am unsure if they will release a new version fairly soon since the text has been around since 1997 - and it's getting a bit old in terms of textbooks. It'd be for calc 1, calc 2, and calc 3 so it needs to last at least a year.
Is there anyway I can tell if it will be replaced with a new version Fall '09?
Stewart has been writing Calculus books since forever, his textbook is pretty much the golden standard by which all other calc texts are measured.
Because of that, Stewart doesn't need to update his textbook all that often. It probably doesn't need to be updated EVER, but since writing a textbook is more like printing money, he does so from time to time (and who can blame him).
I think you have your dates wrong as the 6th Edition is relatively new. It came out in 2007. The 5th Edition came out in 2003, the 4th in 1999, and I think the 1st was 1988. So it seems that there's a roughly 4 year gap between editions. Assuming Stewart keeps the trend going, you'll be good until 2011.
