Over the weekend I came across the most amazing site for German board game fans. Why amazing? Because it has everyone's favorites right online to play with other folks over the internet.

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/?nation=en

(Note: Don't use the webjava thing if you don't have to. Get the client, it's much faster: http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Data/BrettspielWelt_en.exe)

Games

The games available on BrettspielWelt are, for the most part, those which are known as German-style board games[1], with a few notable exceptions (Tichu, Go, Can’t Stop).

Some of the more notable games available are several Spiel des Jahres winners:

* Settlers of Catan
* Thurn und Taxis
* Niagara
* Carcassonne
* Manhattan
* Bluff (Liar's Dice)
* Imperial

And Deutscher Spiele Preis winners:

* Saint Petersburg
* 6 nimmt!
* Caylus

Here is a complete list of the games supported by the site:

There is also an entire meta-game of making a village and building stuff with setting up a town for players and their buddies but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Reading this there may be a way to set up a PAville so if anyone knows anything about that let me know.

I clicked some buttons and managed to do this:

So if anyone wants to join, send me a message or something, not sure how that works either but we can change this as we figure it out.

The game that is currently taking the internet by storm is Dominion

"The game is a card game in which the players compete to gather the most valuable deck of cards, representing a Kingdom. " Takes about 10 minutes to play and makes you want to come back for more.

So who's in for some good old fashioned German boardgaming?

    If you don't know a word in german, but have played the games, how high is the language barrier?

    The website has English directions for every game and when you get the app most of the menus are in english and everything has a details FAQ with pictures:

    http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Manager/

    That lists the Join / Watch / Open menu's being in German but with the English client those are in English too.

    Just played a game of Carcassone with a buddy. Went off with out a hitch. Easy to start a game and get everything moving along.

    So does anyone like board games?

    There are plenty of English-speaking Americans on BSW. Have no fear.
