[Game On] Who's playing Battlefield 1942 / Vietnam / 2 / 2142 / Heroes? We are!

I dug up my BF2 Special Forces expansion but not the original game. So I'm looking to rebuy the whole package (game + 3 expansions/boosters) in stores or the EA Downloader.

If not BF2, what about 2142? I only played the demo and it was similar but the Titan mode seemed cool. So I might grab that (game + expansion), I really don't want to grab both.

So, is the community still alive? Which package should I get: 2 or 2142? Or NONE??

----

UPDATE: Well I bought BF2142 Deluxe Edition.

I actually dug out my BF1942 CDs after the 1943 announcement. There are still a couple dozen good, populated servers at any given time. I'm thinking of switching to BF2 though. Even though I like the WWII setting better, I miss all the little improvements in BF2.

In my opinion, Battlefield never was as good as 1942 and Desert Combat. My hope is 1943 brings back that style and gets people interested again, but it seems real watered down.

The community is still alive for both BF2 and 2142.

I adore 2142 so very much. Valky and FA are killing my gaming time too much to get back into it though.

I have my discs for 2142 and would be interested in reinstalling and playing again. I mainly played medic or support but for all of that I'm pretty goddamn useful, I'm a pretty damn good medic if I do say so myself.

I've picked up BF2142 again, and I'd probably consider playing some 1942.

BF2 can eat a dick though. Last I played it was all plane/chopper rape from the air and a dolphin diving fest on the ground.

BF2 felt a lot less polished and balanced than 2142.

Plus, 2142's sci-fi kicks the ass of 2's boring modern-day setting.

This is my big thing. I love 2142 because it ISN'T the same old "Let's do Normandy again!" or "Modern combat in Middle-East location that may-or-may-not be identified by name in this game!" Sure it's not drastically different, but more than enough to stand out. Plus the slightly reworked classes are great, and it has GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS. Anyone who say they don't want to play an online shooter that incorporates GIANT ROBOTS is just simply wrong.

I hated 2142's infantry weapons and went straight back to BF2. Still play Special Forces from time to time, but my time with the game is pretty much done, outside of the occasional LAN game where we all line up in Jeeps, give one person a ten-second start and then whoever finds them and kills them, takes their place. It's pretty much the only reason I have it installed anymore.

My biggest complaint with post 1942 is that the maps were too small for jets. You would zoom past your target waaaaaaaaay to quickly. You would hit out of bounds after 30s of dog fighting, totally killed aerial combat for me, which was one of my favorite things in 1942.

I mean, you haven't lived til you have squished a German on the head with the belly of a B2 Bomber.

I used to love playing BF2 and then one day it was just a laggy piece of shit. I tried everything..I upgraded my computer on more than one occasion, played on different computers, played over different connections (one through charter and the other through qwest), reinstalled the game a bazillion times but I could never make it work. The game played fine in single player with all the graphics maxed out, but I'd get this really glitchy lag when in any type of multiplayer game (even 1v1 in a 16man map). For example, if I would sprint then jump and let go of my keys whilst in mid-air, when i landed my guy would instantly jump ahead a couple meters.

This may not sound like such a big deal when that would happen when I interacted with any world object (stairs, walls, ladders..). If I tried to jump over a small wall my guy would hesitate on top and do a little breakdance before making it to the other side which wasn't the case at all in single player. I tried using EA's technical support but after we tried several solutions the tech basically just told me I needed to upgrade my computer and dropped it. My processor at the time was an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ and he stated that it was not fast enough for BF2.

    I hate them.

2142 was fun, but a lot of the bugs ruined it for me. titan mode was a really innovative way to incorporate fortress assaults into the normal bf style gameplay. i loved the game, but tf2 has replaced it forever in my team based fps heart.

my main gripe with bf2 was the disparity between the US and Iraqi weaponry. it just seemed like the US was always better, with the exception of the tanks. those were pretty even. but the bradley and especially the troop carrier heli's guns were just so one sided it wasnt even funny. you could tear through people from like 3 miles away with the blackhawk's minigun.

Despite reviews, I see there is much love for 2142. It seems it comes down to the Titan mode. I've already invested time in BF2 (checked stats: 27 hours and last match was in 2006, haha). So maybe it's time to grab 2142 + Northern Strike. Plus Wake Island 2142 seems interesting.

I don't know if it's just me, but BF2142 and I never really clicked. It just seems so... clunky for a shooter. Like, I understand the pacing involved and the squad mechanics, but for some reason 2 felt so much better than 2142.

I grabbed the BF2 demo just to get a feel again, and while it's no longer visually impressive, the gameplay is fun and loads sooo much better than my last computer - which is to be expected, but nice to see.

BF2 was my multiplayer drug of choice. I could never figure out the flying mechanics, but I was mean in a tank. Anti-tank class was my favourite, though. Destroying those huge tanks and sniping people with antitank missiles was lots of fun. Hmm, maybe I should try and reinstall...

Both are really good games in my opinion. The BF series is by far my favorite gaming series, so I would say both. ;)

I've played both games a ton (see my sig) but have been playing mostly 2142 lately. The Titan mode is a blast. I've been in some amazing battles where the titans literally blow up seconds apart. Once the shields go down you have to have some pretty good teamwork to defend your titan, attack their titan or get enough silos if their titan is heavily defended. A few other gameplay tweaks like getting points for following a squad leader's orders and a squad leaders ability to easily point to specific area are nice improvements from BF 2 that help to facilitate teamwork. A squad leaders ability to deploy spawn beacons keeps the battles pretty frenetic and is a nice addition also.

The 2142 patches that have came out have definitely improved it since it came out and it runs better than the demo, that's for sure. EA has announced both BF2 and 2142 have patches forthcoming, but haven't given any dates yet, though it should be soon since they announced them last year.

I guess this came out sounding like an endorsement for 2142, ha ha. I would go with 2142 if you want some new gameplay modes (Titan, Assault Lines) and teamwork enhancing features.

I personally found 2142 to be much more polished than BF2. The chopper/jet problems in BF2 made the game an awful experience for awhile, though they did patch most of the problems towards the end. I reinstalled 2142 some time ago but for whatever reason it crashes whenever I try and load a server. I'll have to try again just for old time's sake this week.

Well outside of patches and the full game it runs great.

I went from a factory HP Pentium IV 2.53GHz, 1GB RAM, ATi Radeon X800 Pro to a custom built Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia 260 GTX - so performance greatly improved (load times, and full on graphics).

BF2142 was way awesome. I was never so invested in a FPS as I was with 2142. I swear I played for hours every night for a duration of a few months. I only stopped because I couldn't connect my desktop to the router via ethernet cable anymore and playing on wireless totally sucks.

God so many war stories with that game. My favourite was when I was piloting a Battle Walker with my buddy in the AA gun. We walked trying to get to a specific way point when we noticed that we had been surrounded by two tanks and another walker. I don't know how I did it, I guess it was perfect coordination between using my rockets, flipping on the shield at the optimum time, and shear skill walking in zig-zags but we managed to kick their ass without getting touched! It was the most exhilarating moment of my gaming life. :winky:

It might not sound so awesome in writing but the game's mechanics felt like they had been designed to make you feel like some epic war hero. I wish I had a good connection to play on and/or that they'd release another expansion.

For some reason the Battlefield games seem to occasionally "click" with me and I'll go on a one-man homicidal rampage. I'll run out of ammo and use my pistol, run out there use grenades, run out of those and finally switch to my knife, all the while getting kills and holding a checkpoint alone. Very rarely have I ever felt so badass playing a game.

To be fair, one good pilot on the opposing team will ruin the game for everyone on your team. Its a BF2 fact of life. It can be minimized with 2 equally skilled pilots to entertain each other, but we never had anyone to match your skill in the air.

It runs pretty smoothly for me right now. Sometimes when you play on 64 player Titan server you still get a bit of lag, but its pretty infrequent. I've also heard with moving Titans turned on that if they get to close some lag will occur, but usually admins will take care of that. I prefer the moving Titan server, adds a bit more strategy and makes having a commander that much more important.

One warning about getting 2142 though, if your PC can just barely run BF 2 I would think twice about getting 2142 since its a more resource intensive game. With my old PC I could run BF 2 OK but 2142 would only run with the graphics settings at their lowest, making it pretty fugly to look at, ha ha.
