Closing tabs in FF 2.0

Is there a way to make FireFox 2.0 not have the close tab "x" on each individual tab, and put the "x" over on the right side so when you click it, it closes the current tab, like it used to be? Or would I just have to revert to using FireFox 1.+?

You can also change the Browser.tabs.closeButtons property in about:config and get the old behavior back without having to install an extension.

Hmm...maybe my joy was premature. After restarting FF, using the right "x" seems to close the 2 right-most tabs when there are 3+ tabs, and turns the left-most tab into a blank page when there are only 2 tabs open...

Guess I will try the editing route...

Tab Mix Plus can also change the X-es placement and it has other neat features as well (like turning off the retarded scroll-buttons on the tab bar).
But I think it basically changes that setting in about:config...

or you can just hit the mouse-wheel, that's really convenient for me at least

Personally, I use mouse gestures (though not through a plugin but a separate program called StrokeIt, so it works with any program) with an "up" gesture to close and "down" gesture to open a new one.
