MP4 Converter -- Need one that's free

It's almost as if all the scumbags and cock suckers of the Internet got together and decided to make worm/pr0n/scam websites and tailor them to come up whenever someone typed in anything "video converter" related into google. Pretty soon this is going to spill over into virtually ANYTHING you type into that fucking search engine.
Anyway, I digress. I need a FREE converter that will take MP4s and make MOVs. That's all. Everything I can find either only does the first 5 minutes unless you pay $50 or it will convert MOV to OGM or AVI or something utterly useless to me.
ffmpeg will do it, I'm 99% sure, but I'm not sure if you've got easy access to that or not as it's primarily used on linux systems. I would think VLC would do it, too, and is probably easier for you to work with.

That link is a lie. MPEG Streamer actually requires a codec to do what I need (or anything actually useful) and that costs money.
I'm actually just doing this for a friend who needs a 48min video converted for a project.. so paying for this is not really an option. Nothing professional about this.
I'm trying VLC right now but it seems to be going way too quickly to produce anything of quality. I'll report back if it works.
Edit: Yeah.. it works in theory but the video itself is full of artifacts and randomaly pauses/rewinds itself. Is there something I'm missing with VLC?
As someone who regularly works with editing software, in my experience, you are going to have a hell of a time finding anything for free that has to do with changing around .mov.
I feel like I'm reading the script to an infomercial.
If I manage to find the download link in this disgusting display of a website, I'll post back with the results. Thanks!
Edit: Aaaaand, It's for PC. I'm looking for a Mac program (hence .mov)
Barring any further tips with VLC that make it somehow convert to better quality, I'm gonna just tell this chick she's SOL. Who the fuck transfers something to DVD Video for storage anyway? Fack.
You're most likely going to have to pay for QuickTime Pro.
Is there any reason MP4 isn't working out for you?

The video needs to go into Final Cut, which won't take MP4.
Paying isn't really an option for her since this is just a simple project.. I guess she'll have to go back to the source and get the video in a different format.
I figured this would be the end result. Video converters are like the pox of the Mac world. I think the people who make Mac software are the same people who scalp tickets for 10x the price and charge $10 for a litre of milk. Those fucks.
I tried to find the codec even to use for it but I can't seem to locate, most likely it's a "codec" but really just a module you have to buy to activate it (probably because of licensing costs associated with it). Or something retarded like that.

QT Pro is probably going to look the best too, the rest will probably be artifacted to all hell.
If the size of the MOV file isn't an issue (I assume there will be final encoding state after she's done working with it) you can probably just up the bitrate and set all the possible quality flags, and it should look fine.
Oh, and don't be scared by the fact that ffmpegX asks for money too...to my knowledge there are still no limitations whatsoever in the program (at least as of last I used it, maybe a year ago) and you never have to actually pay. It's just a nag screen.
Seriously, in my experience ffmpegx does a great job. Give it a try before you give up.
Yeah, I would definitely try ffmpegx. This is the first I've heard of it, but basically, this is a front end to the tools we use at work for audio and video encoding/transcoding to and from tons of different formats.
Super Video Encoder is your friend. I know his web site is terrible and this looks like Spyware, but it’s actually an incredible Swiss army knife for video conversion.

It was already mentionned above. He needs a mac prog, or I'd have seconded this.

e: haha, looks like it doesn't convert TO .MOV files, sorry.
See if this helps you.

I. Hate. Apple.
It's not really free unless all you want to do is open files and say "Poop."
To convert them you need to buy a codec. I've gone through that shit before with that software. Bait and switch can suck my cock.

If you have trouble finding it, it's at the bottom of this page.
edit: Nevermind. It looks like they make you go through the whole thing for the download link.

Thanks for the help guys.
