Throttling bandwidth over a network

My flatemate recently discovered the joys of Bittorrent. Obviously this eats all the bandwidth and, eventually, gets the connection itself throttled down as per Virgins policy for heavy users(link). The throttling only happens between 3pm and 9pm but lasts 5 hours after its been applies, so basically cripples my net access just when I'm using it. Repeated appeals to curtail this downloading have met with either "oops sorry I forgot to limit it" or "I'm paying for it to you know".

What I'm looking for is some kind of software solution to guarantee me my share of bandwidth. I can't really install anything on his PC, however the router is connected through my PC. Is there anything I can do to limit the bandwidth on other PCs on the network?

    What kind of router?

If it can take a custom firmware, dd-wrt can do this.

If it's not your router (and thus this isn't an option), then I don't know.

The router is a TrendNet TEW-432BRP and sadly, no its not mine. Flatemate bought it as he wanted wireless for his laptop.

Sounds like he's a toolbox and you should probably try to buy your own connection, if possible.

Yeah, this would kind of be my suggestion as well. I avoid sharing things with douchebags, never ends well.

I don't know of any free software to do what you need to do. Assuming that by "hooked up through my computer" you mean that the connection goes...

Modem->YourPC->Router->HisPC (which would be an odd configuration)

...this should theoretically be possible. But you'd probably wind up paying for software to do it, at which point I'd say fuck it and pick up a wireless router that can take a custom firmware ($30-$50, depending if you're willing to go used) and replace his with it.

If he complains, you say that you're only limiting him to what the ISP limits you guys to, so that basically you're optimizing overall bandwidth (by avoiding throttling). If he doesn't understand this concept, then just call him a toolbox then beat him to death with a ball-peen hammer, then sell all his shit to help cover his half of the expenses until you can find a new roommate.

Some portion of the above may or may not have been intended as a joke.

I have considered getting two connections but it seems excessive if I could find a proper solution. I did have my own but when he moved in and we sorted out splitting the bills and stuff he said he wanted a TV/Phone/Net package because I only had internet. I said fine if he paid for it, I would pay a tenner towards internet costs. So technically the bills come in his name, but only because its cheaper for both of us that way.

Was hoping someone could just point me to a Netlimiter style program my googlefu wasn't strong enough to find.

Or come to an agreement that he can only torrent when you're not home or you're both out of the house.

Although he might have to wait an extra day for his tentacle rape hentai, if he's not an ass you guys should be able to reach some kind of compromise.

I dunno about BT, but Utorrent is not only a great client, it has a scheduling feature. He can queue up everything to download between 3 and 8 AM and while you're at work, for example.

Yeah, he's being a total douche about this. This would fix things.

    HIJACK!

How do you do this with dd-wrt? I have it installed on my router but can't figure it out.

Yeah, he's pretty much just being a jerkwad. But you can't fix that, except to find a way for him to get punched in the face more often when he's being a jerkwad. This is not a matter of him not knowing how to limit his bandwidth usage from BitTorrent, it's a matter of him not caring. This is why "sorry, 'forgot' to limit it" has morphed into "I pay for it too, fuck off and die."

He doesn't care if their bandwidth gets capped for five hours or so, because during that five hours he's having a little "quality time" with the tentacle hentai that got it capped to begin with.

We've seen this exact same scenario again and again on this forum, and I'm pretty sure it always ends the same way.

It sounds like your bill structure is even more complex, in that he's paying for a majority of the other shit? That makes things more difficult, so really I'd say just get your own connection to avoid the confrontation. Mainly because it doesn't sound like you'll win.

Alternately, if it really is running through your comptuer (as in, your computer feeds it to the router) you can probably run something like NetMeter (google it) to measure his bandwidth usage (on network adapter going to router) and your bandwidth usage (network adapter coming from modem minus his usage), then tell him you're going to have to start splitting the bill based on bandwidth since his BTing is reducing the quality of your service. Don't give him an option, other than paying for his full bill himself.

He might get more reasonable then. Or he might decide his tentacle hentai is worth it, and that scheduling and/or waiting for his tentacle hentai just won't do.
