Open-source or free finance software

I'm looking for something that will allow me to balance my checking account, print checks, track transactions, and generate invoices for a small business; and is either open source or free. Basically a QuickBooks-like that is free (not so much because I hate spending money, but because I hate how most commercial finance software is proprietary bloatware).

Win32-compatible preferred, but I can swing Ubuntu too.

Google says to try one of these titles:

SQL-Ledger
NolaPRO
GnuCash

Has anybody used any of the above? Or any others that bear mentioning? Positive experiences? Negative experiences? Dickerdoodles?

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

I remember there being an article/blog/slashdot discussion or something about this topic. At the time I read it the conclusion everyone came to was that FOSS is sorely lacking in this department, though GnuCash was the most popular choice I think.

On that note, my brother who came to loathe QuickBooks from a previous job now loves the current version for running his own business. Believe me he is the last person to ever use QuickBooks after the experience he had with it, but here he is using the newest version.
