External HD not recognized.

Ok, so my WD MyBook USB external drive stopped being recognized by OSX. When booted in windows, the system claims that the Drive isnt formatted. Disk Utility just gives me option to format, and not fix the issue. Since I have about 250gb of data on that drive, what are my options of saving it?

This is pretty basic but incase you haven't tried it make sure you turn your computer completely off, click the main power switch and let it sit for a few minutes.

Other than that I had this problem once but it was when the external HD was new and it had to be formatted.

(I know this is pretty basic and lame advice but I hate to see a thread with no replies.)

Also did anything come up on a google search? Also try contacting the manufacturer.

Thanks for the heads up. I have tried what you suggested, but no dice, and google is surprisingly unhelpful.
I guess i will try to format it and see what happens. D:

Well if you try to format it you're going to lose all the info on the disk. If thats not an issue then go ahead, otherwise maybe try to plug it into another Mac or PC (i don't know if PC's accept Mac formated HD's)

Assuming you formatted the disk in OS X, there's no reason to expect Windows would be able to read it. If you format it, you're going to lose everything, so first I'd try it on a different Mac.

It was FAT32, so I was accessing it from both systems.

Did you unplug it from OS X without "ejecting" it? I've bricked an iPod that way
