The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I was going to PM a mod with this question, but after reading the rules a few times I think that I'm probably not the only person who doesn't "get" this.
What, exactly, is an "in before the lock" post?
I noticed that redxranger got banned for literally posting that phrase in a thread which was obviously going to be locked. Is that what it is?
I think that this could be better explained in the rules.
It's simply posting "In before the lock!" or some variant in a stupid thread.
Or at all.
The reason it exists is because there would be some stupid thread and people would spam "IN B4 DA LCOK!" for a page or two, and then it would turn out the thread didn't really deserve to be locked anyways. After putting up with that shit for a little while the rule preventing that phrase was put up.

If you don't know what it is, then it generaly dosen't apply to you.
In before the lock posts are exactly what you describe.
As for why people get banned for that
- it bumps threads that are going to be locked rather than just letting them die
- it's stupid, done by stupid people and stupid people should be punished for their stupidity.
Unless you happen to make the situation where it is posted really, really witty and funny (hasn't happened yet) or feel that your banning would add to the color of the forums (much more likely).

Ecoterrorism is actually the single largest terrorist threat at the moment. They don't usually kill people, but they blow up or set on fire very expensive things.
