having issues with psx emulator for psp.

A while ago, I started playing ff7 on my psp on custom firmware. Recently I got retail patapon and it needed a newer firmware so I updated to 5.0m33 (I think that's what it's called) . After the update, the textures and text in ff7 get all garbled after 10ish minutes of play. I can't see the backgrounds and all text is replaced by blank rectangles. I've rebooted and fooled around with the settings in recovery mode but the error keeps reappearing. Do any of you have suggestions on how to fix this?
