Master and Commander / The Aubrey-Maturin series
Bid you welcome aboard the joyful Surprise!
The Aubrey–Maturin series, of which Master and Commander is a part of, is a series of historical novels — 20 completed and one unfinished — by Patrick O'Brian, set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin.
The main topic of this thread, is the
kickass movie made by Peter Weir in 2003. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
THE CREW
Capt. Jack Aubrey
"Lucky" Jack is the Captain of the HMS Surprise. In the film, he is tasked with pursuing the
Acheron, which he is relentless in. Although he is a genius at sea and with practical matters, he has large gaps in his understanding of everything else, as demonstrated by his clumsiness with metaphors.
Russell Crowe plays Jack with much bravado.
Dr. Stephen Maturin
Physician, natural philosopher, and
secret agent (although it's only hinted at in the film), Maturin primarily serves as the ship's surgeon, as well as being Jack's best friend. In the film he's in love with the Galapagos Islands and spends quite a bit of time playing his cello with Jack on the violin. Although extremely erudite and a linguist, he remains perpetually doomed in his occasional attempts to use naval slang, or to explain the working of a ship to someone.
Paul Bettany plays Maturin to perfection.
It's also worth noting that in the books, he captured a sloth and brought it back to the ship.

THE PRODUCTION
Great efforts were made to reproduce the authentic look and feel of life aboard an early nineteenth-century man-of-war. Much of the filming actually took place at sea on board Rose (a reproduction of the 18th-century frigate HMS Rose), while other scenes were shot on a full-scale replica mounted on gimbals in a large tank. The Rose is now renamed HMS Surprise in honor of her movie role and moored at the San Diego Maritime Museum as a dockside attraction (and recently returned to regular sailing status).

you can be a member of the crew for a bit.
There was a third HMS Surprise which was a scale model built by Weta Workshop. A storm sequence was enhanced using digitally-composited footage of waves actually shot on board a modern replica of Cook's Endeavour rounding Cape Horn. All of the actors were given a thorough grounding in the naval life of the period in order to make their performances as authentic as possible. To create an authentic sense of camaraderie among the cast, they were all housed in special quarters, away from the rest of the crew. Designed like a gentleman's club, there was no TV, and no crew member was allowed in without being invited. It was nicknamed "The Monkey Bar".
The ship's boats used in the film were Russian Naval six- and four-oared yawls supplied by Central Coast Charters and Boat Base Monterey. Their faithful 18th century appearance complemented the historic accuracy of the rebuilt "Rose", whose own boat, the "Thorn" could be used only in the Brazilian scene. During the film's pre-production, the replica of Captain James Cook's ship, HMS Endeavour, was circumnavigating the globe. The production was able to fly 2 cameramen to the ship as it was about to sail round the bottom of South America, a route the HMS Surprise takes in the film. Thus, the footage of the stormy seas from that part of the voyage is genuine. The gunnery scenes were particularly authentic with live rounds being fired over numerous microphones in order to capture the proper sound effect of cannonballs flying through the air. About 27 miles of rope was used on the rigging of the replica Rose. Most of the rope had to be made especially, as modern day rope has a right hand lay (the direction the strands run in) whereas it would have had a left hand lay in Napoleonic times.
Regarding a sequel
Over five years after the movie's 2003 release, there are currently no announced plans for a sequel to be made by movie-rights holder 20th Century Fox, despite the remaining 20 books available in the Aubrey-Maturin series.
Director Peter Weir, asked in 2005 if he would do a sequel, stated he thought it "most unlikely", and after disclaiming internet rumors to the contrary, stated "I think that while it did well... ish at the box office, it didn't generate that monstrous, rapid income that provokes a sequel."
In 2007 the film was listed on a list of "13 Failed Attempts To Start Film Franchises" by the media website
www.avclub.com , noting that "... the Aubrey-Maturin novels remain untapped cinematic ground."
Although Russell Crowe is not under contract for another film, he is reportedly interested in making one. Most of the rest of the cast is reported to be under contract for two more films; a common procedure for movie studios when signing up for a film, whether a sequel is made or not, in order to ensure much of the original cast comes back.[
This thread is for those who have shared in the long ocean voyages, hardships, adventures, explorations, loves, lusts, friends, enemies, society balls, secret espionage, rolling broadsides, victories won, prizes taken, shipmates lost and gained, breakfast coffee and bacon, wardroom spotted dogs, and evenings of violin, cello and Killick's toasted cheese, with our heroes Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin, and their esteemed creator, Patrick O'Brian.
Let us discuss this great film (and awesome books!) and maybe I'll see
you on the quarter deck!
Posts
I should really watch it again soon.
I also recommend the books very much. They're so pleasant to read.
But I didn't have any inclination to read the rest

It's the same with Miami Vice.
Also I was hoping this thread would be announcing they are making it into a game. I could use a good naval combat game.

I'm just sayin, as long as your first ship was the Surprise (or the Sophie)
I thought the crew always hid women on board before the set off?

Shit, why didn't I think of that in my previous incarnation as a British Naval Commander?

Too bad the cannon was removed from the boat and Aubrey was wondering for half the book why his boat was so weird looking.
EDIT: Trent, Miami Vice is awful and you should be ashamed.
You better pronounce it correctly.
