Things to do in Portland when you're single

Hi Penny Arcade,
So, I've got an odd problem. My current circle of friends are all roughly ten years older than me (I'm 24, they're all 35-ish). I love them all and we always have a great time being together. Unfortunately due to the age difference they're all at a different stage in life than me -- they're all married, own homes, have kids, etc. While I enjoy hanging out with them there are times when I'd like to go out and meet people my own age.

Here's the problem. I've never actually gone out on my own. It's like, I step outside and I don't have the slightest idea what I'm supposed to do. I'm also somewhat shy and socially awkward around people I don't know, which makes things all the more difficult.

Any advice?

Ask your friends? Seriously, before facebook and friendster, social networking was your friends and their friends. Surely you can't be the only "young" person your friends know? If they're from around there, ask them what they did when they first got out of college (I advise against asking what they did when they were your age -- it probably wouldn't be, but it may be taken as an insult).
If they're not locals, ask them what they did when they first got to town. Make conversations about it, but get background on fun things to do and things to see.
