Dual booting old XP partition?

I recently upgraded my machine and am running on Windows7 atm. Unfortunately the old boot.ini in the XP install I was using before apparently doesn't line up on the new hardware. I've tried adding XP to the boot menu via BCDedit.exe (Well ... EasyBCD), but when I choose it as an option at boot it does nothing and just resets the PC.
Is there any way for me to salvage my existing XP? Or is Windows retardation going to cause me to have to completely reinstall it? And how should I go about doing that if so, if I have Windows7 installed first?
