Nintendo DSi? Really?

So Nintendo is releasing the new DS, the DSi, to North America on April 5

NINTENDO DSI LAUNCHES APRIL 5 IN THE UNITED STATES

New Portable System Offers Customized Gaming Experiences

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 18, 2009 – Nintendo pioneered hand-held entertainment in the '80s and made it fully mobile with the Game Boy™ video game system. Now, Nintendo is transforming the way people access, experience, create and share content with the new Nintendo DSi™ system, the third iteration of the world's best-selling portable video game system. Nintendo DSi launches in the United States on April 5, 2009, at an MSRP of $169.99. The colors available at launch will be Blue and Black.

...

Some features that will be built into the system and ready to enjoy upon purchase include the Nintendo DSi Camera, Nintendo DSi Sound and Nintendo DSi Shop. The most noticeable feature of the slim Nintendo DSi system is its two cameras – one camera is on the external body, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open. As the first truly interactive digital camera in a video game system with 10 different interactive "lenses" that can manipulate your photos, the Nintendo DSi Camera offers an easy way to take and share your photos with family and friends. The cameras also present people with unprecedented ways to interact with their games while giving developers a new tool to devise creative games and experiences. If the touch screen gave Nintendo DS a sense of feel and the microphone allowed it to hear, the two cameras give Nintendo DSi the sense of sight.

Another enhanced feature is the Nintendo DSi Sound application, which serves as both an interactive voice recorder and music player that allows users to play with their music while they listen to it. Users can access different audio filters or control the pitch and speed of recorded voice or music files to alter voices or change the tempo of a song. The mic is located between the two screens when the device is flipped open, and there is also a stereo headphone output that lets users listen to music saved on an SD card, even with the screen shut

In the world of software, Nintendo DSi will be the platform for the most relevant and fun on-the-go games and applications. The Nintendo DSiWareâ„¢ application will populate Nintendo DSi with software that can be downloaded using Nintendo DSi Points directly to the portable system, just as WiiWareâ„¢ has with Nintendo's Wiiâ„¢ console. Developers big and small are invited to create software that makes use of the properties and functions of the hardware. Nintendo DSiWare games and applications will be available at a range of values, starting at 200 points.

In addition to downloadable games, Nintendo DSi is able to play games made specifically for the system and sold at retail. The system can also play most Nintendo DSâ„¢ games, and will have access to a library of more than 850 titles originally made for that system.

The bad news is they took out the GBA cart. Meh, haven't used that thing in forever though. But they added on two cameras and some sound stuff and downloadabe games. Meh, the new features are kinda blah to me, because I rarely use the camera on my cell phone, and i already got an mp3 player, so thanks. But it still looks nifty. Won't be buying it on day one because my DS lite is still awesome, but maybe a few years down the line.

So how many of you dudes are gonna be buying it? Excited?

Oh, and watcha playin on your DS these days?

Right now, i'm playing the new fire emblem game, which is a remake of the original. Its pretty balls awesome.

PS. the wii is still lame

The DS is a great handheld, but the DSi reeks of cash-in.

I never got a Lite, I may do so if they drop in price after the DSi comes out.

I had a Phat for a while, but no longer, and I have still not played a DS Pokeman.

Yeah, I don't think I'd buy this. Knowing my luck, once I did get around to buying it, they'd announce a new version of it or something.

Currently playinf FF4 DS, then I'll be playing Chrono Trigger, and I'm going to pick up Dragon Quest Hand of the Heavenly Bride on Friday (thats when it comes out here.)

I dont have a ds, never played one, i take a few longish trips on the train and usually rely on a newspaper/sleep/mobile games to get me bye. Would a Ds be good for me? I used to like the old Gameboy advance, are the games pretty much the same? Are there any groundbreaking games or is it a wii portable, a "must have" but shallow

no need to apologize, but yeah, the ds is definitely a must have, and have tons and tons of great, innovative games for it that use the touch screen really well and not just as another gimmick. you should definitely pick one up. check out the phoenix wright games.

The best thing about Nintendo handhelds is Advance Wars, Fire Emblem (to a lesser extent, imo) and FFTA (I haven't played the second one but I hadn't played the original before FFTA, either)

I knew this would happen, but it was worth buying a new ds lite for christmas because I have put it to good use since then. Looks like eBay will be its home now come April 5th. You guys think the price it would fetch on eBay would go down because of the dsi coming out so soon?

So in other words, only Nintendo approved developers with an office address in an industrially-zoned area with a submitted business plan can make games for it.

    EDIT: I meant zoned industrial.

This is what Nintendo means when they say that they invite developers "large and small" to make games:

    http://wii.ign.com/articles/853/853752p1.html (regarding WiiWare)
IGN: As far as getting a dev kit goes, how difficult is that for a developer? The price is $2,000, but previously Nintendo wanted a ton of specifics. You needed to have a company address that was zoned industrial, and it needed to be a pure licensed developer. It isn't exactly an "open source" feeling in that sense, while it is extremely accessible for those in the position to develop already.

Prata: For non-licensed developers we're encouraging them to fill out a license application so that they can become developers for Nintendo. It is the same type of development you'll do with any retail content, but it's a different type of retail in that sense. The end result is content that will be delivered to consumers digitally, so we're also providing the confidential information in the form of SDK's and the like, so we do require that they're a licensed developer. They can always contact us fill out a developer application though.

IGN: All the restrictions still stand though, correct? A lot of people were thinking that this move is a more "open source" decision, but you'll still need to be a proven, licensed developer just the same, right?

Prata: Yeah. In the end it's still about solid content that consumers can enjoy, so while the size of the team and budget is less restricting, we still want professionals that can secure solid content. In some cases though we have larger companies with smaller groups working on content, and so the breath of the developer content can be a lot wider in that sense. As you're probably aware the resource requirements are going up from generation to generation, so developers are having a harder time having their concepts made into retail packages. Wii Ware allows the opportunity to not only do something different, but actually have that reach consumers they way it needs to. If a developer can dream and create it, the consumer can enjoy it.
