The Warranty On Your Car Is About To Expire [Telemarketers]
I've been receiving phone calls that say "This is your final warning, our records indicate the warranty on your car is about to expire. Please hold for a representative for a special offer." and I want them to stop. I get them 2 - 3 times a day, and I am on the government's no-call list. Law says if I ask them to remove me from their list they have to, but the second I ask they hang up. How can I deal with this? If I call the police what is the likelihood they'll deal with these idiots? Is this chargeable as harassment?
I should probably also mention, I don't own a car. My parents do, so it makes sense that if they were looking at car owners and actually had access to these records, that the home phone would get these calls, unfortunately my cell phone (with a different company, unlisted, and in my own name - not my parent's) also gets this call on a regular basis.
I doubt your local police could do anything since the scammers are probably located hundreds of miles away. The Better Business Bureau might help but probably not.

The number is located in Toronto (about 2 hours away.) I also didn't mention this in the OP, and was just coming back to update it, but they also call my store with this message on a regular basis (listed as a number owned by a university.) Does anybody else here suffer from this?
Is your number listed in the phone book? Aside from calling and telling them the warranties on their unkicked asses are about to expire, your only option might be to change your number and pay the few bucks to not to have it listed.

I've received a few of these calls as has my mother-in-law who doesn't even own a car. It's a scam. I had heard something on the radio a while back about who to report this to but I think it's a province by province thing. It's a scam regardless so as soon as I hear it I hang up or if I see the number I just don't answer. The DNCL is so screwed up. Anybody can buy the frickin' lists for areas so "businesses" can "update their own do not call lists" but it's mainly companies buying them so they have numbers that they normally couldn't get a hold of by other means.

My cell phone number is not listed, but is on the do not call list.
And, as much as I would like to ignore it, they leave voicemails of their recording on my cell phone - which costs money to check to delete - unless I'm absolutely sure its them and can wait till I get home to delete them.
While I don't know that it will help with the pre-recorded messages (I get these too, though less so these days), http://ioptout.ca/ is an effective tool that works in conjunction with the DNCL legislation. Basically it automates the process of individually requesting normally exempt businesses to remove you from their contact lists.

That's fucked up. Really. It's a whole new dimension of fucked up. I'm shocked.
I get these messages too, or rather I used to get them. I think I became so annoying that they stopped. I would actually hold and just yell out some unintelligible word like RRAAARRRRRRR!!! every time they would call, or I would just keep repeating 'what?' over and over again until they would hang up. This was over the course of at least 2 years though mind you.
Alright, I just did the ioptout thing. This company probably wasn't any of those but oh well, at least I've hopefully stopped some of the other less frequent ones.
And yeah, I've decided from now on I'm going to get nasty with the them every time they call. Try to demand they take me off their list, and if they don't I will at least be contacting the police about it - whether or not they can actually do anything about it.

The FTC can do something about it if they call after you told them not to.
From what I've read, that includes a fine for every time they do it.
Also you get a chunk of that, but that had no proof to back it up.

I got these for awhile. The first time I listened through the thing and pressed the button to opt out. Then I got them even more frequently. I pushed the button to connect me with the sales rep. When she got on the phone I said something like - "I think your records are old, which car is this referring to?" She said it's good for any car between 199X and 200X. So I asked if there's any way I could get off the list. Click. Haven't heard from them again.
I thought I saw an article about the FTC/FCC investigating these guys but cannot find it now.
I started getting them more and more. From a previous person with my # (only had it for a year and a half). Either he's got bad credit or something cuz every few days, it would be, "THIS IS A MESSAGE FOR BOB (ie not me) PLEASE CALL US IMMEDIATLY TO AVOID FURTHER CHARGES". Then we get the free cruise messages, etc. All pre-recorded, not a person to yell at. And I'm not calling back a random #.
Eventually, my g/f and I got sick of them and pay $1.50 a month with Telus to have call blocking. After we blocked 5-10 #'s, we've stopped getting them.
I get these type of calls occasionally on my house phone, and I always say something like "Oh, just hold on, I have to turn the grill off, back in a tick", then rest the phone down next to its base, don't hang up, and come back to it when I hear the disconnect tone. They rarely phone back.
I also had some sad drunk bloke call me one night, telling me I said I'd phone him back, but never did. Wrong name, wrong city. He persisted for a while, left voice mail messages and texts until i texted him saying i had kept all his messages and had informed the police. Never heard from him again!

I got this call yesterday. It's annoying, since I get them on my work phone.
It's stupid, too. Awhile ago I actually pressed 1 or whatever to say "yes, I'm interested. connect me to a salesman". It rang for 30 seconds or so and then just hung up.
It would be a lot more fun if you actually got a person. I've gotten a human being a few times and asked to be taken off the list. I'm sure that XYZ scam corp took me off, but I still get calls from the other million shitty companies that do this.
I actually got one of these this morning (in Virginia, unlisted cell). As soon as I heard "warrenty" I just hung up. Probably happens about once a month.

I get these as well. Unlisted cell phone that I never use for contact info.
Would there be any legal ramafications for using that on a phone scammer?
Not sure. Supposedly callcenters are using software to normalize or cap volume on the caller end though, so it won't be nearly as effective as it used to be; and even then it's limited by the dB level the phone will reproduce. But strictly legally? It might be "harassment" but no worse than you'd be charged with if you told them to fuck off and hung up with some force.
I just reply with "Fuck off" and put them on the blocked caller list now. :P

It really should be cleared up that these 'warranty' people are not telemarketers.
They are private citizens trying to illegally scam people out of money, and are not represented by a (real) corporation.

So what you're saying is that the airhorn defense would work? :winky:

I really don't mind a once in a while telemarketer call, you know the polite person that doesn't really want to bother you. But I can't stand the telemarketer calls that expect you to sit on hold to be marketed to, and do it on a regular basis.
Ugh. I kept getting this same damn call over and over a few months ago. I'd ask to talk to their manager or for them to take me off the list. They say they're doing it, or transferring you to a manager but they just hang up. Thankfully, for me it finally stopped after a few months. Haha.

Oh yes... I keep getting these on my Cellphone... and I'm an unlisted number. I'm highly displeased, and I'm not even Canadian! I do know however that if you hear dialing or have to push a button to respond that suddenly it stops being a free incoming call and suddenly becomes a very expensive outgoing call. At least that was the big scam a few years back, and I've never wanted to see the bill come in after one to test it.
I work at a call-center (we don't call people, we just get called), and there definitely isn't any noise-leveling software in use. If someone blew an airhorn in the phone it would be loud as fuck.

Annoying as hell, but nothing the police are really going to do anything about. You might try filing a complaint with the FTC, though.
