AMVs are handy for me because when I want to hear pretty much any random song ever, I can search for it on youtube and there will be an AMV of it and I can listen to the song.
A-M-V.org holds some nice competitions that are centered on quality, and many of their competition members have their works on Youtube.
IIRC, I'm member #81 on there.
I used to really be into the AMV hobby, and it used to be a pretty cool community, until the advent of easily acquired digital media and digital editing software allowed participation to explode. I'm not saying that lowering the barriers to participation is a bad thing, but it allowed the signal-to-noise ratio to blow completely out of proportion, which killed it for me.

I'm going to have to agree. Finding the exceptional videos on AMV.org was hard enough, but youtube has made that impossible.

This is the only interest I have in AMVs as well, seeing as how I'm no longer 13.
I mean, really The Cars, Moving in Stereo without All Mixed Up on your Greatest Hits? Really?
I do enjoy the old Toonami commercials though, which sort of count as AMVs.
I remember when it wasn't particularly hard to watch most every AMV as it came out, with any worth remembering ending up on one guy's personal FTP server. Going from there, to where Dragonball was the anime used 10:1 to the number 2 spot, Linkin Park was the most used artist 15:1 to the number 2 spot, and two or three times a week you could find a video unironically titled, 'In Vegeta's End,' was a surprisingly fast transition.
But are there any other classics that stick out in your head? Never saw the one you posted before.
Man, never ask an old timer that sort of question. Now I'm going to have to spend my evening rooting around youtube to see which of the original bests have made their way their, and which I have to dig deeper for (a friend of mine had seen all of my AMVs on youtube once, but had no idea they were mine until coincidentally I talked about my experience in video editing - someone had just uploaded them all).

Now you're just being a tease, bring it! All of it.

Rule number 1 when making an AMV, no freaking subtitles in the vid plzkthx.
Also, amv.org hasn't been the same since they got rid off the off topic forums. Really pissed off those of us that were postcount racing.
99% of amv's suck, but the good ones are golden. just go with the editors that you know are good. AD, Fluxmeister (NHMK), Steakslim, and SpPanda are a few editors that I can think of off the top of my head that consistently make good videos.
I thought about being cheeky and including a link to my stuff, but my AMVs were adequately competent, and when the field gets as crowded as the AMV hobby did, adequate is no where near good enough to distinguish yourself from the crowd.
I fell out of like with AMVs pretty much around the time four out of five new videos were based around Linkin' Park.
Ditto. Also, when AMV Hell 3 and 4 were so utterly fantastic that everything else which has come out recently pales in comparison.
I guess I have to ask, what's AMV Hell 3/4?
The things which address the problem with most AMVs: They see one line from a song, or think of a decent intro, or something funny for a short bit, then fail at attempting to make a video for the entire song which makes it worthwhile. So they made AMV Hell, which was a series of comedic clips set to short portions of songs. It was rusty, and more a proof of concept. So they made AMV Hell 2: Son of AMV Hell. Which frankly, wasn't that good. But at that point, it became a community collaborative project, where people submitted clips and they were spliced together into AMV Hell 3: The Motion Picture. It's a tad over an hour long, and for the most part, utter gold. After that came a competition, which was put together (AMV Hell: Championship Edition), which was entertaining, but unfortunately had repeating songs due to the format. Then they came out with AMV Hell 4, which was a good hour and a half, and pretty much as hilarious as 3.

I'm sorry I never heard of Doki Doki until now. That Sailor Moon / Springer one was perfection.
(Also, seconded on Shimmer/FLCL)
On a similar note, not an AMV, but the editing is amazing(sub aside):
There's a rather funny one (VERY NSFW) AMV using TISM's Everyone Else has had more sex than me. I'd link, but YouTube and work and all that. I'll try to remember when I get home tonight.

This is very true. A lot of stuff works way better as a short clip than a full video.
And I really like this one because of the music. It's the FULL opening of MGS2 done to Smash Brothers Melee. Up to a certain point, the video is almost shot-for-shot, angle-for-angle of the opening of MGS2 recreated in SSBM Brothers of Liberty
Personally, I'm gearing more towards these types of videos (video game cutscenes and trailers instead of anime) as well as the movie trailer stuff. I had some really good ones that Black Hawk Down over Gatsuraki and Aliens to Blue Gender.

It's the first and last AMV I'll ever make.

Hey I remember way back when you had to download all those AMVs because there was no youtube.
Whipper Snapper.
I think you just Hansen Roll'd me.

So I just stick with the classics now

If only the live action were remotely close to as exciting as that.

It seems text in general is faux pas, which is odd for me as a newcomer.

Done.
Oh god, why did you say that? Now I'm going to spend the next hour searching youtube for old AMVs.
Having made one myself (sort of, it was to the City of Heroes cgi trailers) I think I finaly gave up on it.
Best song from the best movie. :^:
I still like Children more though.
Anything by Maboroshi Studios Kevin Caldwell or Aluminum Studios are pretty much the best of the best.

We won't discuss 0 or /0.
You can find them all here
Edit: Tainted Donuts is great. And I'll also give a nod to ErMaC Studios for having a number of quality ones back in the day.
Anyway to start off, I recommend anything by these guys:
Koop
VicBond007
Van Halen
Daniel Chang
I'm having trouble finding some of the more obscure ones, like RYS' videos. I did find his Shamanic Princess AMV on a russian youtube.
EDIT: Oh man, I got beaten heard.
I'm sorry I never heard of Doki Doki until now. That Sailor Moon / Springer one was perfection.
