Yeah they've cured it a couple times now, technically

Except all of the treatments are either incredibly impractical, incredibly expensive, or incredibly inhumane

And this one sticks to the pattern.

in fact you could say HIV and AIDS are the same thing as AIDS is just the most advance stage of HIV

    that article explicitly says:
"This type of virus can infect macrophages (another type of white blood cell that expresses CCR5) and other cells, like the brain cells, and it could live a lifetime. But if it can't spread, you never see it-- but it's there and it could do some damage," he said. "It's not the kind of approach that you could say, 'I've cured you.' Yeah, that's a shame. I wonder if that is more of a CYA comment or if they really expect a lot of effect from it.

    um, they're being scientists
if they know the virus could be lurking undetected, then how can they legitimately claim they know it's gone? that's not covering your ass, that's good science

Stem cells cure everything....if you are broken in some manner get rid of the broken part and graft on stem cells, they naturally differentiate into the cells they are put next to...only healthy versions.

And if you're really fucked, then we'll use mutant (rare genetic trait) stem cells to cure you.

Or, if you're religious, just think of it stealing the souls of dead babies to cure rich people and force the government not to allow any agency (universities?) receiving public funds to come within 1000ft of stem cell research because abortions are definately the only viable source of stem cells. :x

Well yes, presumably they're fucked, and I think it's safe to say most of them are resigned to the fact that Salk is not going to ride in on a pencillin horse to save the day. What we are saying is if there is a chance they can "cure" the earlier stages of the disease, it will make it easier to solve the problem of the latter stages. It's good news for those that have HIV, those who might contract HIV, and in helping to stomp out HIV/AIDS altogether.

Yes but in the article they give the impression that they don't really know why it hasn't rebounded, as he was also infected with a type of HIV that is not stopped by this procedure

my point was only that it's hardly a cure, and in theory HIV could still reemerge even after this sort of treatment, and the doctors themselves aren't sure why it hasn't in this patient

also I'm not sure what it means that you can't see it but it can still do some damage
