    I think the real question here is "Why are they making a mvie out of Stardust and not American Gods?" AG was at least fifteen times better.

    Stardust is shorter and more straightforward for translation into movie. While I'd love to see an AG movie, i'd hate to see stuff get cut out of it. Even without the "Coming to America" stories it'd be long, and I'm not sure the story really lends itself to the movie-watching experience. I could be wrong - give it a talented director and they could probably pull it off. But I'm glad they're doing the (relatively) easier stuff like Stardust and Coraline first, hopefully they'll give AG the time and respect it needs. Anansi Boys i think would also probably work better as a movie than AG.

    Am I the only one that saw the (leaked?) pre-vis 2D animations used to pitch this movie a while ago? I can't seem to dig them up again; everything that seems to be about it is coming up 404.

    It looks so cool.

    At one point they have sex during the gun fight!

    Awesome

    Ain't It Cool had some info on it up a bit ago, with pre-screenings coming back pretty positive.

    The trailer for the movie is right here:

    Im disappointed, I thought this movie was going to be about a kid obsessed with shoot-emup(shmups) arcade games!

    Marilyn Manson as the Joker would be the stupidest choice ever.

    Well, the reason I said Manson is they wanted to go with a scary Joker, and I could just imagine him as one scary Joker...kind of a barqoue noir style.

    I guess that's a pretty good encapsulation of the book, that gods kind of formed around central concepts to our lives, and degree of belief in them or consideration of importance of their sphere determined their existence and power.

    I dunno - I guess some religious people get pissed about every book or movie that presents a different view than their particular flavor of religion. I don't know that this would really rise to the level of churchie boycotts though.

    No, that would be the point of it. That we (humanity) created the gods to protect what we hold sacred, whether it be our desire to believe in something, or something as mundane as television.

    i dont think there is any chance that the ender's game movie will be good, because:

    1) child actors / actresses suck;
    2) wolfgang peterson sucks (although enemy mine was kind of cool);
    3) producer will want pg-13 rating, but mpaa will never allow the amount of child violence necessary to make the movie work into a pg-13 movie.

    Secular humanism + armoured warbears = WIN.

    I really don't see the religion issue as being a problem with AG. I mean, the fundies protest against everything and everyone. This just adds one more to the list. It didn't hinder the His Dark Materials movies, which are quite explicitly GOD = TEH SUXX0RS. And Stardust will get fundie hate too, for all the witchcraft. But Stardust, being simpler and more kid-friendly, will probably make more money than a hypothetical AG movie, which is of course the point.

    Call me weak-stomached or what have you but I rarely find myself able to enjoy any movie that tries to hammer me with a not-at-all-subtle stance on politics and religion. I could take Chronicles of Narnia because at this point it's a lot more subtle. I couldn't stand all the political "overtones" in Revenge of the Sith. Get back to the droids and epic battles please.

    There are of course exceptions, but for the most part I can't think of any off the top of my head.

    Only movies Im excited about for next year are 300, Hot Fuzz and the Transformers movie. Im sure Ill see others and they will be OK but 2007 looks like it will be another weak year for movies.

    Now that theres no LOTR to look forward to no year can be a truly great year.

    I hope a few things can sneak up on and be great though, those are always the best films. I also hope that 300 can be as unbearably cool as it looks to be. All it needs is a few inspiring speeches and plenty of those armored Rhinos and it could be a classic.

    Since Lyra's world is so very different from ours, its just interesting to see what you can pick up. The Republic of Texas, for instance, or armored fucking war bears. Panzer-fucking-bjorne.

    For 2007 though:

    Smokin Aces - just looks damn cool
    TMNT - i grew up with the turtles, so this is a must for me
