The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
At my college, my program is hosting an arcade of sorts to raise money for a trip to Toronto. We will have pretty much every kind of system there. I will be providing the PS1.
Now, I'm mostly a single player type of gamer, so I only have a couple multiplayer games in my own collection. What would you guys recommend to flesh out this admittedly meagre offering of games?
Here is what I have so far:
Bushido Blade
Cool Boarders 2 and 3
Dragonball GT Final Bout
Jet Moto 2
Tekken 3
A few of my friends have suggested Crash Team Racing. I remember having some pretty good times with that one, but I don't know how much play it will get if we're also having Mario Kart there (since from what I remember, CTR is basically a MK clone)
Street Fighter Alpha 3
The King of Fighters '99
MTV Sports: Snowboarding or MTV Sports: Pure Ride (both are great and pretty superior to Cool Boarders, IMO)
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Team Buddies is a superb multi-player game. Can be hard to find though, it;s well worth it, the action-RTS hybrid is fairly uniqe and the graphics (for a PS1 are great)
A Bomberman game will never offend,
Word of advice for Bushido Blade. At some point, someone will get the idea to do the Hidden Fortress spear-on-spear fight. Someone else will go "Cool, lets do it". Strangle them with the controller cable there and then, it will save the 13 hours of boredom that they and the spectators will suffer as both opponents fail to land a hit on each other due to ineffectual failing. There are not 2 people in the whole world who are skilled enough to have a proper spear-on-spear fight, it just cannot happen.

You're underestimating. I do believe that it's the second most expensive PS1 game to get on eBay, only after Tactics Ogre.
Crash Team Racing is still the best kart racer I've played. Though I never did get to play Double Dash. But it's way better than MK, MK64 and MK Wii.
I've never played the later Mario Karts either, I was just assuming he wouldn't want to buy a PS1 game so similar to his newer Mario Kart Wii or some such. But yeah, CTR is awesome.

Yep, just checked. $270 new, $150 used.
Wow, I don't feel so bad for buying it full price 2 years after release now.
PRE-EDIT: Hmmm, PAL version isn't so expensive only £35 to buy used. Worth every penny, even if I couldn't get passed that fucking Penguin level. Fucking penguins.
Crash Team Racing is awesome, I consider it to be way better than Mario Kart.
If you can find a PS1 multitap, try and get ahold of Quake II. It has four player deathmatch with some pretty cool maps at a solid framerate. Jarret and Labonte Stock Car Racing has four player support as well, and also has car damage, which can make for some fun races.
Battle Hunter is awesome if everyone has their own characters made already, but most people don't really like that game.
edit: Jedi Power Battles is way better on the Dreamcast. The PS1 version is still fun, but is pretty terrible in comparison.
I just bought Tenchu 2 off of ebay. Sure, it has splite screen multiplayer but then it loses the stealth element. Bushido Blade is a fantastic choice though. Carmageddon is another classic racing game with a twist. Has great multiplayer to boot.
Seriously. It will probably be a bitch to find, but that game is so fucking good. Basically it is the Aztec sport of Tlachtli but instead of a rubber ball it's a hunk of burning plasma and you have to use a special glove to handle it. It's 2v2 and I believe you could plug in the multi-tap and play four-player. There is nothing quite like charging up a shot at the goal and then when some punk ass alien gets all up in your face trying to block you just letting him eat a face full of burning energy ball.
Also I would second Trap Gunner. That game is the bee's knees.
Speed Freaks/Speed Punks is a cute little kart racer made by FunCom. 4 players as well. Though I suppose Crash will cover the racing part.
Really? I remember playing the demo, and IIRC the controls were just so super-slippery.

You Don't Know Jack. Either the original (which is actually the second PC game) or Mock 2.
Best part is you can even play 3 players with 2 controllers.

Well it's been nearly 10 years since I last played this game, but I do remember the tracks being really wide to accomodate the sloppy controls. You turned a lot before the wheels decided to grip and move you in the desired direction. It was a fun game nonetheless, with pretty impressive graphics at the time. I quite liked the menu screen (you swivelled the camera around a treehouse where all the racers were and each character offered an option, kinda like Banjo Kazooie).
Does anyone remember C-12? I thought it was quite good. I mean, not great but better than most gave it credit for. 'Couse, I only played a couple hours but still.......
Video for no apparent reason of a game that can't really be recommended due to lack of a multiplayer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvH967MQ6ec
If you can find a multitap, Wu-tang Shaolin Style is silly fun and then expands on Crash Team Racing and Poy Poy if you can find it, also any Bomberman is always fun also:
C-12 was pretty awesome. It was made by the people who made MediEvil.
The only thing that bothered me was that since it was originally released so late in the PS1's lifespan in Europe (well after the PS2 was released), SCE just released it in the US without re-recording any of the dialogue.
Running down the street taking on hordes of alines with the help of two NPC freedom fighters should be tense and riveting, but instead it's hilarious because they're shouting out battle cries to the aliens and they have strong European accents and it just sounds like something out of a Monty Python sketch.
Kinda weird you brought up a singleplayer game in a thread devoted to mutiplayer games, but I can back you up on the fact that it was pretty awesome.

Yeah, I'm gonna apologise for bringing it up again because that was random. I just sort of remembered and had a nostalgic moment there.
ANyway, Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style was, and still is fantastic. There's also the destruction derby games which I played to exhaustion. I think it's correct name was Demolition Derby, not destruction which I always mistake it for.

You'll have to excuse the awful music in that video; it's not from the game.
It's basically Twisted Metal under water. This was my favorite multi-player game on the PSX bar none. We could never find it for sale, but we would rent it every chance we got. So much fun.
G-Darius was a fantastic 2-player game. Just be prepared to fight giant mechanical fish and get into DBZ-esque beam battles. I'll also second the Bushido Blades and Street Fighter: Alpha 3.
Posts
edit: and Street Fighter, too. That should get a lot of plays.

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.

so good
Yes.
Also I recommend Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi for some reason.

If we're gonna go with under-appreciated Star Wars games, I also recommend Jedi Power Battles.

I second the orginal bushido blade, and THPS 2 also.
CTR is pretty good, but already listed.
Soul Edge maybe? Tekken 1-3? Twisted Metal 1-2?
Street Fighter Alpha 3 was already mentioned but let's do it again so we're all on the same page. SFA3 is the best PSX fighting game.
Right now I'm working on the first 2 Twisted Metals and CTR
Thanks for the recommendations. This thing is going to be running all week so I have time to keep expanding the library

No it is Destruction Derby
No, I was right
Its the sequel to Demolition Derby 2.
Critical Depth!

Only decent video I could find was recorded from a PSP, skip to 3:20 where he actually starts playing.

Edit: Wow this guy sucks, I wish I could find a better video. The game's pretty sick in decent hands.
