Okay, so I'll (hopefully) be going to uni soon and it has to be said I am desperate for a new look. I would have changed my look sooner but my mum would never have let me, and, well, she's bigger than me so her word is like the word of God in my house.
So I need your opinions, and possibly suggestions on this stuff:
you're going to dress in all black and wear a trench-coat? Dude, if you are looking to V for Vendetta for fashion advice, you need some serious help.
And I tell you this from experience... a trench-coat is NEVER, EVER, EVER a good idea.

but that isn't a long trench so it's fine, and kind of cute.
no fedoras, they make you look kinda pathetic and nerdy (or they make you look pretentious and hipster)
also why just blacks? some color could do wonders, even if its just in dark jewel tones
If you have a female friend, I would suggest having her go clothes shopping with you. Like Belruel said, going with only blacks may not be the best idea - she can help you pick out some other colours that look good on you. Or, if you don't mind trusting to a stranger, ask someone who works at a clothing store to help you choose some outfits, but having a friend do so is probably a better idea, at least at first.
If you're going to get the trenchcoat, and the converse you should really look at a different pair of jeans. I think slimmer jeans would look alot better as long as your frame can carry them off well.
and get more colors than just black. earth tones always look good, and sometimes you just need to throw that orange, or purple option in there to break up the monotiny(sp?).
also also, just curious but what do you look like? body type is important when considering a new fashion, and skin tone and general coloring helps us advise good colors for you
I am frightened beyond words at the thought of that
Edit - Yeah, post a pic so we can determine what would/wouldn't work. Blur or blackbox the face if you want to stay Anonymous. Or put on a V mask for the lulz. :P

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Standing out a bit is a way to be noticed, and then get invited to interesting parties. Obviously there is a balance to be had here, but if you just completely blend in life can be rather dull.
Everyone looks like they try too hard when they first start uni anyway. You'll find a comfortable place to be eventually.
There is a way to look classic and have your own style without looking you are about to cut yourself of shoot up your school.
The key word here is UNDERSTATED. Stand out by having an interesting personality that draws people to you... not by looking like your on your lunch break at Hot Topic.

guys, did you look at the trenchcoat he linked even? it's a cropped coat, ends right about the waist, it isn't a 'shoot up your school' coat
It's a slippery slope.
Actually... the jacket is pretty cool. Combined with the rest though, I'd expect him to either be putting neon lights all over a honda civic, or shooting up his school.
Neither of which are good first impressions to set at UNI.

Silk shirts are crimes against fashion. Period. And a fedora is right out too. You'll look ridiculous. If you really feel the need to wear a hat that isn't a ballcap, get a driving cap or something similar. Any hat with an all-around brim looks ridiculous on most people under the age of 40.
The black Converse sneakers, are however, classic. Any shoe that works with prep and with punk is magic, in my opinion.

Also, don't wear black jeans. Or white Jeans. Wear blue jeans.
But keep in mind that the name "blue jeans" encompasses like a million colors. I prefer a darker or steel blue, but you may prefer something else.
If you know a girl, you should probably go shopping with her. That will save you from like 90% of possible mistakes.
Okay, so we've just deduced that you are not the Queer Eye fabulous dresser sort of gay man. Which is cool. Maybe you're the one who cooks?
In any case, yes. Your fashion sense seems to be a little bit too derivative of The Matrix-meets-Maltese Falcon. Find a girl who appreciates Film Noir but also likes movies like Mama Mia! or Slumdog Millionaire and help her find something you can wear that has, like, color.
Shirts do no go with Jeans. Ever. And hats make everyone look like a tool. Good for summer though.
Anyways, it'll mostly depend on your build. If you're super skinny, you'll end up looking like every other emo kid. Might as well get some eye-liner and blend in. If you're fat, you're just going to look like a massive nerd with no social skills and a fetish for playing Live Action Role Play. One might be better than the other depending on your point of view.
Just out of interest, what are you going to be studying at uni? It's not exactly uncommon to see english lit or philosophy students wearing all black, so it wouldn't be a sartorial catastrophe in those circumstances.
Going clothes shopping with a lady friend is good advice, however.
Why are you dressing in these clothes? Do you like them and think you look good in them? Then screw what other people think, thats all that matter.
IF, however, you are wearing these clothes to purposely set yourself apart, thats just stupid. I mean, do non-comformists even realize that, by dressing in all black with trench coats, looking like Hot Topic's bastard child, they're really just conforming with what we think a non-conformist should look like?

The ironic bit here is that it absolutely is a sartorial catastrophe! If Jean-Paul Sartre saw you walking down the street holding a copy of Thus Spoke Zarathustra and wearing all black on your way to a philosophy class with a bunch of students who were also all wearing black, he would slap you for your bad faith portrayal of a philosophy student. It's the academic equivalence of the Sartorial Waiter.
People studying lit and philosophy: as a lit/philosophy graduate, please believe me when I say that when you come to class for the discussion of Being and Nothingness garbed in black from head to foot, the rest of us know you didn't actually bother reading the book.

If you don't want to conform, dress how you want.
Your unique snowflake-dom will be cold comfort while you are sitting alone, and ugly, in your room. No one is saying that the OP cannot carve out their own sense of fashion. They are saying, do not do so by dressing like the kind of person likely to shoot up a high school while looking hideous.
Also, still not sold on that trenchcoat. You can probably find a better looking peacoat or something.

And as a fellow dual honours philosophy graduate, I can request that you believe me when I say that when someone showed up to a class at my uni on Being and Nothingness garbed in black from head to foot, the rest of us didn't bat an eyelid. The ones who dressed more alternatively were actually the more attentive students on my course, but obviously YMMV.
Is it an outfit that you'd expect a student doing a particular course to wear? Well, sure. But I honestly have trouble thinking of an outfit that a student's going to affordably and easily wear that wouldn't look generically student-y. It's university - all black is incredibly tame compared to some of the sights that are common place (I've certainly seen several people wearing outfits identical to the one the OP outlines). If the OP wants to wear pre-dominantly dark colours, then he may as well; a female friend'll be able to help him arrange a look that fits him.
On a sidenote, had you noticed yet that your avatar is wearing pretty much exactly what you would get if you threw all of the OP's links together into a single outfit?
Yes. It engenders empathy. :P (I had been meaning to change it...)
As a final little bit of advice for the OP, make sure you don't spend much on whatever clothes you do finally buy. Uni will seriously wreck your clothing.
Hah. I see someone else just modulated his sense of style.
Truth to the "don't spend much" comment above. The number of times I've ended an evening without my coat because I got drunk and left it somewhere makes me sad.
Honestly most of the artsy people I see at uni wear tight jeans and fashionable tops. The girls all seem to wear really weird stuff. Humanities students are similar, but less cool.
The engineers wear either mismatched and ill-fitting jeans and tshirts, or all-black and trenchcoats.
The scientists look a bit like a mixture of the two with an added amount of boring and respectability.
It's actually quite amusing guessing which courses people do as they walk past. It's surprisingly easy.
On a side-note, the netball girls all seem to wear ugg boots, tights, and a hoodie with their name on it. It's amusing. Anyway, my social observations are over now.
I don't think the black jeans are bad, but they need a light colored tops to go with them. Having one pair of black jeans isn't so bad...but then again, I'm a girl :-P maybe it's different. Also, I wouldn't go with full black...a faded black kind of like this color will look better.
It's really hard to find a good black pair of jeans, which is why I think people are steering you away from them.
If you're on a budget and only buying one or two or even three pairs of jeans I would just go with blue. In this picture I think the "dark chipped" color would get a lot more use than the "soft ridged black". Even the two lighter blue colors aren't bad.

Button shirts aren't always terrible with jeans, but it really depends.
Silk is out, for sure.
Fedora is no. That's just retarded.
Pretty much what everyone has been telling you all along.
Don't dress like that. You will not make many friends wearing that shit. You'll just be "that guy in class that dresses like a fucking idiot" that no one will want to talk to (even if you are a charmer).
What's your current style look like? Pictures damnit! We are here to help.
I saw someone wearing an outfit fairly similar to what the OP is suggesting at my universities career fair. The look is bad enough let alone when everyone else is dressed in business clothes.
I'd go with some tight (or slim) dark blue jeans, some solid color shirts, some flannels and button downs, aaaand go with a black pea coat.
Converse sneakers are cool. Maybe some Vans?
Just a guess, based on your OP.

Dress in whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. That is so much more important than what you are actually wearing. Be out going, friendly, and fun and you will make more friends then you know what to do with. Even if you dress funny.
I wore a fedora in college. (sometimes i wore lots of hats)
admittedly all black might send an IM SO EMO message but who knows maybe that's what your going for. Even the model in the coat pic is wearing BLUE jeans. but that coat is a bit of alright.
