Going home to Dallas [Need great places to stop and eat]
Basically, I'm going from Columbia, Mo. to Dallas via I-35/Kansas Turnpike. It's going to be a semi-roadtrip for my girlfriend and I, so I'm looking for great places to stop and eat along the way that won't take us too far off our course. I don't really want to drive an hour in a direction to get to wherever, unless it's really, REALLY great. Something like you'd find on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives. Anyone know of a few great places?
Also, good luck on that drive. I live in Kansas City and driving to Norman (only 5 hours) to see my parents is a bitch and a half. I-35 from Kansas City to Guthrie, OK sucks balls.
My brother goes to University of North Texas up in Denton which is on the way to Dallas (about an hour north) and everytime i visit him, we always go to The Movie Tavern. I'd advise against going to any movie tavern in the dallas area since those are probably more crowded and Denton is a pretty small college town. The food is good and you can have a beer while watching the movie. Since you're from Dallas, you might have already been there but just in case..
Im from central Texas so i know a lot of great BBQ joints but i cant recall anything being near dallas. I know there's gotta be some good places in Oklahoma... i swear Guy Fieri was in oklahoma for a pit barbecue place one time but i cant remember to save my life. Sorry
If you're willing to detour onto Northwest Highway there's a place called Mexicali that unless it's changed over the last couple years has some of the best Tex Mex available.
Rossi's Cafe is another nice place I worked at. It's a great little grease spoon that puts other diners to shame.
Brint's Diner in Wichita was on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives.
Cocoa Dolce in Wichita is not too far off 35. Not exactly dinner, but tasty.
Manna Wok is a tiny shack in a shit neighborhood with really good cheap Korean food. Not exactly a tourist destination, but if you're hungry when you get here (likely, considering the geography) it beats the fast food and chain restaurants. Il Vicino (small chain, few locations) has pretty good pizza and salads, is quick and on the cheap side. That's all I can recommend (leaving off fancy expensive/overpriced places, and bars where the main thing is the beer selection). I haven't tried Brint's Diner yet, although I've been meaning to.
Once you're in Dallas there's a place called Peggy Sue's that has great barbeque, and huge portions at a great price. It's right across (diagonally) from the SMU law school.
If you like Chinese, stop by Mr. Chopsticks in Denton, Tx. Its essentially home made chiense food, fucking awesome in every way. But make damn sure you get an egg roll.
I'm a fan of Chicken and Rice. Yes, that's the dish, and the name of the restaurant. Careful though, cause there seems to be tons of them, "Cj's Chicken and Rice", etc. But the one I always like the best is simply called Chicken and Rice.
Thank you all for the replies. Looks like Wichita is definitely a place I'm going to have to stop for a bit. I actually did find the list of all the places Guy's been in Diner's..etc.
