Big Love: Bill Paxton is a Mormon (or More-MAN)

biglove.jpg

I took a look around and was surprised to see no Big Love thread. With Season 3 now underway, this show is surprisingly incredible for the arguably absurd premise.

For those not in the know, Big Love is an HBO series about a Mormon named Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) and his polygamist family. He has 3 wives: Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Nikki (Chloë Sevigny), and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin); and more children than I can effectively count, the two oldest being Sarah (Amanda Seyfried) and Ben (Douglas Smith).

The show deals with their struggle to evade the more radical factions of their fundamentalist beliefs (represented by the polygamist compound Bill was exiled from as a child) while trying to successfully live in suburban Utah. They're hit by all sides of the spectrum. "Normal" people ostracize their lifestyle, which they attempt to keep hidden, while more intense fundamentalists shun them as sinners and traitors. Within all of this, they also have to deal with the drama of such a large family. Each main character is well rounded, representing different histories and archetypes.

Barb was Bill's first wife, and comes from a more mainstream background. She is, in many ways, the matriarch of the family, often cutting through conflict with reason. She does have her flaws, however, and sometimes draws animosity for her position as first wife. Nikki one of many daughters of Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton), the prophet of the compound at Juniper Creek that Bill was exiled from as a boy. She is by far the most religious of the bunch, and is often cold and snide. Margene is the third and youngest wife. Her mother was a neglectful alcoholic and she represents perhaps the least likely mormon one could imagine.

I would try to expand on the plot, but I really can't. There's just too much. Every episode seems to constantly balance 3-4 subplots involving sets of characters in or closely involved with the Henricksons. I highly recommend giving the show a looksee if you haven't already.

The most recent episode may have been the best in the series.

I saw one episode of this a month ago (the one where they think the whole neighborhood knows that they're polygamists, but it turns out that they're keeping their kids from hanging out with one of the daughters because she's charging money to show the neighborhood kids a nudie book). It was an interesting show. I especially liked how the show dealt with the lost boy and Bill's reaction to him and attempt to help him out.

When he dies, I hope they write "Worst Affirmative Action Hire, EVER" on his grave. His corpse should be trolled.

My favorite character is Barb. I love the moments when you can see her slow down and wonder how the fuck she got where she is. She was a liberal LDS woman, pretty much as liberal as you get in Utah, who got kind of dragged in to a particularly atavistic form of Mormonism. I find it really compelling.

I loved the epic disaster that was the last episode. This family is fail, and watching Bill finally get to suffer makes me full of tingly joy.

Bill really is a manipulative SOB, isn't he? I'm starting to think Machiavelli was required reading for all the men at Juniper Creek.

He's a hugely entitled misogynist brat. Which is, of course, the culture that he was raised in, but it doesn't make me think of him as any less of a twat.

I used to like Barb a lot, but as time goes on I've become weary of how little independence she's willing to demonstrate, and how completely she's let this become her life. Ironically, despite hating Mormonism, Nikki is morphing into my favorite.

Yes and no. He certainly is manipulative when it comes to protecting his interests, his business, dealing with the compound, etc. But he's probably one of the more honest members of the family when it comes to intra-family drama. He's flawed, sure, and sometimes humorously blunt, but you can tell he really cares about the well being of his family.

I had the opposite feeling of MrMister this past episode; I felt bad for Bill. Also at the end of that episode:
Sarah's miscarriage showed the family being pretty strong. There was no exile, no anger, just sadness and forgiveness.

Truth, though I hate the new hair. While my wife absolutely loves this how, I only put in a passing interest mostly for Margene. I can't even watch 'Walk The Line' anymore cause it pisses me off how much of a bitch she was in that movie. It taints her cuteness in Big Love.

Yeah, that was great. Although the funniest part of that episode had to be
Nikki discovering the two kids with the ashes in the back of the car. Then them all screaming at each other. I like how they never follow up with that; you don't even know if Margene ever found out

    Also
Yes, Sarah is very very lucky she miscarried, though I can't help but think that was partially the writers just trying to keep things easy for themselves.

Yeah, I was watching with my girlfriend and when Kathy started fleeing in the car she said "Her hair is caught in the door, what a strange detail." And I immediately said "She's about to die."

The next episode looks to be pretty intense. I wonder if this is going to turn the Henrickson's cold war into a hot one.

    End of last ep
At least she went out fighting instead of submitting. Tragic, but better than the alternative of creepy guy verbally signing his statements between rapes.
    Sarah:
Is a teen aged girl. Teenage boys are almost always stupid jerks, teen aged girls are almost always spoiled brats. Its an unfortunate part of development, and her environment isn't exactly training her to be drama free. But at least she realizes she has a problem.

Oh yeah there's little doubt that Heather is a lesbian and in love with Sarah. She wasn't just mad at Sarah for being an inconsiderate flake, she was mad at Sarah for taking away her fantasy of raising a child with Sarah as if they were a couple.

This show is interesting, but it frustrates me to the point where I probably would not watch if my gf didn't like it so much. Bill's family is absurdly political, so much so that it's almost unbelieveable. But the worst part is that most of the characters make these humongous mistakes and when it blows up in their faces, instead of feeling sorry for them I tell 'em: "Saw that coming."

Bill has his fingers in so many pies. He is trying to control the compound, keep Home Plus running, get involved in gambling, get Roman permanently out of the picture. Meanwhile of course his family is falling apart because he devotes 0 time to them. Barb is clearly unhappy about the direction her life has taken her, but does not stand up for herself in the face of Bill, whom she still loves despite his myriad of bullshit. Nicki is a lying, pushy, snide, insecure, spoiled reprobate; she is almost beyond redemption. (Though to be fair, this stuff with her birth control and the lawyer and asking to be taken "off the schedule" are surprising directions for her). Margine is the only likeable wife, though she can be frustrating as well.

The whole thing is going to blow up in their faces. I feel like the episode two weeks ago was just the water beginning to roil.

So it would seem that shit be going down. Does Nikki have a daughter with Wanda's creepy brother?

Also, I can't tell if I want Roman to die or not. On the one hand, it would be extremely satisfying to see the character go down. On the other hand, that actor is easily one of the best to watch in the show, from the incredibly serious moments (Nikki pushing him down the stairs at the courthouse) to the wacky yelling at the TV during wheel of fortune (which was maybe one of the best moments during last night's ep).

I hope there isn't another massive hiatus after this season.

I think they should have gone with
the threesome angle. As in Bill admits it to someone and they go "Do you do it with two of them at once?" And Bill goes, "Great googlemoogly! That would be awesome! How did I never think of that!?" And then spend the rest of the sketch trying to figure out a way to make it happen.

I'm glad someone finally pointed it out.... Nikki is a sociopath lol.
