Furniture for new home

Im going to be buying a home soon. I have the money for Down Payment and Closing costs, just saving up now to outfit my new home with my stuff.

I plan on buying a nice TV. Thinking Samsung's LN52A650 52-Inch, just gotta get used to the Soap Opera Effect it has. Feel free to persuade me otherwise.

Thats about 2 grand. Going to get a Couch and Large Chair(maybe recliner) to watch it on. I sleep on a futon (can't stand springs or memory foam) so I got that covered, will be buying a platform for that though. Maybe a dresser and new desk.

What I come here asking for help for. What are some of the things I take for granted in my parents house that im not thinking of buying for my new home? What are absolute necessities and what can I get away not having for a few months?

p.s. I have kitchen ware(glasses, plates, pots/pans, utensils)

Thanks!

Tv, couch, chair, bed and stuff to eat with/on are the essentials. The other stuff you get get piecemeal.

If you're getting a dishwasher (and plan on using it) you're going to need about twice the number of dishes/utensils you think you will. Especially with only one or two people using them.

Even if you aren't a huge Ikea fan. Take a look at the Pax Solution. Some of the options look really really nice and do a really good job.

This is not necessarily furniture, but make sure you paint or do any other work on the house before placing your brand new furniture/electronics. It's a much bigger pain in the ass afterward :P

See if your parents have any old furniture lying around/in storage they don't want.

We kitted out our basement with a variety of Sumo beanbags, including Sacs and Omni Plus. For the price of one couch we wrangled unique and comfortable seating for 4-6 people. We completely love it.

If you're planning on having people over at all, getting a kitchen/dining room table's pretty important if you plan to eat with them there. Doesn't have to be fancy or pretty. Besides that, storage as Rank mentioned. Things look way nicer on shelves than piled haphazardly in a corner. If you're buying a big TV like that, you're going to need something to put it on as well, unless you're wall mounting it. Make sure you check the supported weight on any stand you consider. LCDs are pretty light, but some stands are pretty crappy.

I would advise against buying everything all at once, simply because it's much easier to envision how things fit once you're in a space for a while. You realize things like "That space needs This" and "I need to move this Here" and stuff shifts around.

If you buy it all at once, it's very easy to end up with ginormous furniture that doesn't fit a space, making it feel cramped.

This. Start with little bits - you can always add more later.

Also, re: the TV - disable that stupid 120Hz "MagicFrame" or "MotionPlus" or whatever it's called, and bam, no soap-opera effect.

    This.

You can get away with waiting on it, but that'll mean living out of boxes until you do. Nothing makes a place feel more like home than a set of shelves, all full of your things.

You're going to want that dresser and desk. You mention a desk but no desk chair? Cheapie chairs from Walmart or Target can go a long way if you plan on having anyone over at any time. Also, you don't mention having a table (coffee or dining) which can be a real life saver.

Some other random stuff you might want to make sure you have (depending on the setup):

    - A shower caddy/hang in the shower/thing to keep your crap on
    - A dish rack/drying rack for your dishes
    - Sponges, dish soap, windex, stuff to clean the place with, laundry detergent, dryer sheets
    - A broom and dust pan for when you break your dishes
    - A trash can. You don't mention it at all and that's really something you want ASAP
    - A laundry hamper/something to carry or put your clothes in
    - A shoe rack if you have more than 2 pairs of shoes or anyone else is living with you and/or a door mat
    - Bath towels/a floor towel or mat for the bathroom
    - Shower curtain: get the plastic inner lining and then whatever outer lining you want. Shower hooks too. You can skip the outer lining but the inner lining is going to get gross given enough time and it's nice to be able to just change the inner one.
    - Hand towels
    - For the kitchen: Some type of larger spoon, a spatula, a pan, a pot with a lid, a flat pan for the oven if you have one
    - An oven mitt or something for picking up your hot food before you burn yourself
    - A shelf. It can be a bookshelf or whatever, but you're probably going to want to stick stuff somewhere -- this ties in to the storage that people mentioned. Think about what you've got and where you're going to want to stuff it
    - Hangars

    Great ideas so far.

I do plan on wiring my house and putting a data closet in because the house I will buy will be 20+ years old probrably. Then painting after that. Im debating with myself whether or not to run wire for a media closet deal for the living room. Would be nice, but in 5 to 7 years when I might want to sell potential buyers may not agree with my setup, or worse I get tired of the arrangement and decide the TV would be better somewhere else.

I don't like Coffee tables, but end tables I will get. Probrably craigslist those and a kitchen table to put in the eating area.

Im glad I made this thread because I hadn't thought about shelves or storage stuff at all.

And thanks for the TV tip, I will have to check that setting out on my friends' TV as they have that and when I watch their TV all I notice are small flaws and I don't like watching Actors Act. I like watching Characters interact with eachother.
