I was having a conversation with a friend last night about giving up things for Lent, even though neither of us are religious. I decided something that I most definitely need to give up is frozen foods. I am lazy and cheap, so I have been eating frozen/microwave foods daily for a long time.
I picked up sandwich goodies today, and may need to scour some of the cheap cooking threads that have been around this forum for ideas.
I plan to extend this beyond Lent, as more of a late New Years resolution or something. I have a feeling my body will appreciate it.

Our religion teacher was putting ashes on people's foreheads today. Only me and one other person didn't take them. It was awkward.

Based on what? It doesn't make widgets, but it's the foundation of ethics, which pertains to any number of very practical situations, and I think a grounding in the basics is a big aid to critical thinking.
I didn't really learn anything enlightening about ethics from any philosophy class I ever took or any philosophy book I ever read.
Well, that makes me curious. What is your background in philosophy? Because I've seen you discuss a lot of medical ethical issues and even some stuff that falls more in the realm of epistemology.
Just some undergrad college classes and independent reading.
Here's the central problem with this discussion: lacking a clear notion of scope, philosophers & philosophy majors can apply their lingo and techniques to any human endeavor. So you could potentially argue that, for example, two bioethicists arguing about the ethics of using embryonic stem cells is a form of philosophy, or an application of philosophy. I don't see it as such, though, as a background in philosophy - as in, the philosophy taught in college, or the writings of famous philosophers - is not really necessary to have that discussion. In fact, such a background may even obfuscate the discussion.
Feral on
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
Except sharks. Who can feel rage
i mean they very statement "philosophy is useless" is itself an act of philosophy
academia is fraught with poor communication and intellectual elitism, but that is no excuse for anti-intellectualism
one could at least say "the current field of academic philosophy as it is institutionalized is useless"
i'd still disagree but at least it's not a hopelessly broad generalization
their inability to remove it obviously declares their desire to have a discussion on psoriasis
Ain't No Sunshine is the sadder song.
