This thread is mainly to help people who are wondering about picking up older 360/PS3 titles but aren't sure if there is still an online community to play with.
Titles I know for sure that still have active strong multiplayer communities:
Shadowrun (Xbox 360) -- while it didn't do very well at retail, there is a rabid rabid community of fans that play this every day.
Frontlines Fuel of War (Xbox 360) -- didn't do well initially but I think that it sold pretty steadily as time passed and the price came down.
ChromeHounds (Xbox 360) -- only the hardcore need apply
Catan (XBLA) -- easy to get a game going during primetime or on weekends, late night might be a little more difficult
Dead Or Alive 4 (Xbox 360) -- As of last weekend 10 multiplayer games or so going on
Team Fortress 2 (Xbox 360) -- I thought the 360 community was dead. I was wrong
Ridge Racer 6 (Xbox 360) -- Active community still going strong
Halo 2 (old Xbox) -- may be a little long in the tooth but still gets love from it's massive hardcore mp community
Resistance (1): Fall of Man (PS3) -- Still a healthy multiplayer community
Warhawk (PS3) -- Awesome multiplayer community, not as big as it used to be but still very easy to get into big matches at any hour of the day
Calling All Cars (PSN) -- People still play this ... maybe I should buy I've been debating
Mario Karts (Wii) -- Got a Wii? This is a must own title and still has a decent sized mp community
Bomberman Live (XBLA) -- Everyone loves Bomberman. Still easy to find games
If you guys could help me add to the list that would be great. Often I'm at the bargain bins and I'm not sure whether or not to pick up a title due to wondering if the MP community is dead or not.

Don't let the OP detract you. You will run into players that eat and sleep Chromehounds, that can tell you the specs of every part for each faction and they will have built killing machines that you couldn't even dream of, but it is still a blast to play!
Shadowrun still going huh? I remember having alot of fun with the demo. I may just have to pick that up if it still has peeps playing it.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
I wish I had the time to get into it - it seemed like a really good game for old MechWarrior players to get into. I probably wouldn't have skipped it if it had some kind of local or system-link play (bots, co-op missions, etc), but it's too late for that now.
I was suprised to find that Dead or Alive 4 still has a good few players hammering away. I checked it out last weekend and found about 10 or so games open. At some point, I'm going to dust off my mad Kasumi skillz and join in!
changed the OP title happy now?
Really? I thought that the 360 community had died out (everyone playing on PC)
Nope, tons of games still going.
This was taken on 2/15/09 at around 11pm CST.
In fact once the 360 DLC drops I'll likely never play the PC version again.

I think there's an online multiplayer community for Carmageddon 2.

Are they even going to be releasing the DLC for the 360? I haven't heard anything about it yet, but my fingers are crossed.
They will. They've said it multiple times. I can't imagine them saying it so many times and then not releasing it. Microsoft won't let them release it for free so they're gonna wait for a bunch of updates to be released and then package them together in one bundle so 360 users don't feel like they're getting ripped off by having to purchase each individually.

Thanks for the contribution, added to list. That's the sort of title I'm looking for ... obscure, but a title that would appeal to fans of that genre.

Resistance: Fall of Man (The first one) still appears to have healthy numbers
Warhawk is still very popular despite being pretty much a launch PS3 title. Not as busy as it once was but still good.
Calling all Cars - I've actually managed to get a fair few games of this recently which I was quite surprised about.
Wii
I know you didn't list the Wii but I was pleasantly surprised to discover Mario Kart online still had a healthy number of people to play against. Ended up in a few 12 player races.
360
Crackdown... ok I don't actually know if people are still playing it as I just play it with a friend... but if they're not they should be

Also is Ridge Racer 6 a 360 or PS3 title (or on both)
still, nothing beats gliding onto a building holding a katana. shit's dope.
Its Ridge Racer 6 on the 360 and Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3.
Shadowrun is dirt cheap so you can easily get a year membership + Shadowrun for less than the price of a regular game, especially if you wait for a Live deal.

I do love me some giant mechs, so should I pick it up? About how much would it cost?
So basically the farthest we can go back is to PS2/DC era, which isn't really old. Boring.
And hey both games I mentioned were released on consoles. Heh.
They didn't have Valve and TF2 to learn from on how to deal with a game of it's nature.
However, how MS handled the game doesn't change the fact that it's still a top tier FPS games.
OP is missing Bad Company.
