Killzone 2: Kill yourself to catch up to the fight!
I find it almost impossible to get reaccustomed to the shooting mechanics of this game after playing Modern Warfare 2. I tried once and I was like "uggghhhhh." So slow and cumbersome.
I had no problem very successfully shooting mans while playing this game the first time around. After putting it down for a few weeks to play other games, I picked it up again and found that I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn while playing online.
Which is why I ultimately got rid of KZ2, as fun as it was.
One handing two shotguns like that would have your arms flailing wildly every time you shot. The kickback on shotguns is beefy. Not that I enjoy either franchise for the realism.
Just got a PS3 and despite getting several games with it, I've mostly been playing Killzone 2.
To my complete surprise, I'm doing rather well right out of the gate. Currently 1st Sgt, about halfway to the good conduct and killing specialist unlocks, which I'm looking forward to since the default ammo supply is so light.
Got the map packs, and a headset. Looking for some teammates. Being a newbie to PS3, how does their equivalent of party/invite/etc work? For instance, if some people from PA add me (reference PA in friend request please) and we try to get together for a match against pubs?
I just finally got internet at home again. I'll be up for some games later this week if your on. My PSN name is in my Sig.
Maybe we can start a new clan?

I would have liked an option for you to use ethier the heavier control feel or the usual faster FPS feel instead of removing one from the series which used it greatly to make room for the other.
I honestly have no beef with one or the other, in fact I though the heavier controls made it a more challenging experience in the campaign and in multiplayer. The only thing I didn't like was the one dimensional characters, but that's hardly a fault in a FPS.
I haven't really picked up on a "heavier" feel to the controls, apart from a sense of momentum when running, jumping, and stopping after a sprint. Granted, I haven't unlocked the LMG yet.

So you haven't noticed the delay on the analog stick bound to moving the camera? I didn't notice it myself until someone told me. Then I hated them for it. When you play next, move the analog stick you look around with (so the right stick). Pay attention to when you move it and when your view actually starts to move.

It's acceleration-based, which I usually hate, but which isn't distracting here. I upped the sensitivity two ticks in the controls menu before even starting the game, though. Force of habit.
The only thing that just does not work like other FPS titles I've played is close-quarters melee fighting. In Call of Duty, I could sprint past someone, spin around and plant a knife in their back without breaking stride. That's not possible here, and regardless of what they're saying about the controls in KZ3, I doubt it will be possible in that game, either. Dead Space 2 was supposed to be a betrayal of the fanbase, too, but it looks awesome. I'm content to wait and see how KZ3 looks a bit closer to release.

Oh that's right, they added precision aiming tweaks. Back at launch, we had the default sensitivity. It took about half a second for the camera to start moving. It's not much, but enough to throw your aim off. I ended up adjusting my aim by moving instead of aiming, since movement didn't have the delay.
Well time will tell how they handle the control changes. Could be good or bad, depending on how they alter it. I hope it doesn't effect pacing too much though, I loved the pace of fights in KZ2.
Edit: There are no words for how much this thread title still tickles my fancy.

I can imagine the aiming delay was one of those ideas that worked better in LAN testing than in the online environment with real-world lag.
At any rate, the weapons control really well in KZ2 in its present form, IMO. They're just weighty enough to feel responsive without being "twitchy" like Call of Duty. Only thing that still bugs me a bit is the collision detection in close quarters combat. Unless I'm seeing things, enemies seem to be able to run through me, making melee attacks kind of tricky against anything but an unsuspecting target. The camera view probably makes my perspective much wider than the actual character model, so maybe it makes sense, but it's still distracting.
Anyway, just hit Master Sergeant and got the Killing Specialist badge. Only a couple more ribbons til the Example Soldier badge and a bigger ammo reserve. Haven't tried the LMGs yet, leaving those for tomorrow.

The game's not gonna be awful for the lack of it, but I liked the weightiness. It was something unique to the series and it's a shame they're dropping it.
Great, so now KZ3 is going to be a shitty twitch fest like MW2... pass. I mean, if you enjoy running at 30mph with 60lbs of gear on your back, dual-wielding 30lbs weapons and hip shooting barretts like they're colt single action revolvers go play mw2. I'd rather have some sense of mass.
I can understand if you like MW2, I mean I'm sure some people eat shit sandwiches for breakfast. It's cool. But go play that game if you like to eat shit sandwiches.

Lot of assumptions in that paragraph.
Anyway, got in some good matches the last couple of nights, extending my record to 15 wins, 6 losses, one draw. Still loving this game, all except for the bursts of static and word fragments that pass for lobby and in-game chat.

Played the KZ3 pre-alpha jetpack 3D murderface demo at comic-con today. 3D, as is standard, seems to wash out the colors (from the already meager palette) and make the visuals darker. Do not want. demo gameplay otherwise was great, felt like KZ2 with a jetpack, which is not bad. I wasn't thinking about it at the time, but crosshair movement probably felt a lot tighter. Maybe. Probably.
Killzone has always been about the rollcoaster ride. Sure, might not be much when you finish. But it's worth breaking out for a spell every year or so.
Has there been any confirmation that they tweaked the controls? Last game felt like it was a war being fought by drunkards... I'm always up for games that decide to add jetpacks

Are you talking about the weight the guns had? Because that had nothing to do with the controls. But yes, they listened to the whining and have removed the most interesting thing about KZ2's gameplay. Now it plays just like 99% of the other shooters around, just what we all needed.
Anyway, that KZ3 trailer looks amazing. Real pity Brian Cox can't be brought back though, he delivers amazing speeches.

They changed the controls? Fuck.
Loved the controls. The weight made the pacing seem more deliberate.

Yeah, the animations are still meant to be similar so that should still be good but the slight lag when you turn isn't there anymore. I'll probably buy it anyway though.
Guns actually having some weight is realistic. I thought that was what all the cool kids wanted these days? Or is it only realism in the Michael Bay sense?

This is a game where the space UN fights space Nazis on another planet with jetpacks, mechs and lighting guns. I dont really expect realism to be a prime time player in the design, especially if players are now going to be moving more vertically with jetpacks.
And yet they don't have lasers or a lot of typical sci-fi technology, so clearly there is an obvious realistic angle to the setting. Just like Battlestar could be realistic while having all the crazy shit it had.
Also, the ISA are a government, not just an organisation. They're also enormous assholes.
Aside from the Helgast being even worse, I'd agree the ISA is pretty incompetant. The top brass blew off the advice of the UCN and "went it alone." That didn't turn out well.
Except the Helghast are only worse because the UCN/ISA fucked them over in the first place. If the UCN had not conquered Vekta, sending a large number of the Helghast civilians to Helghast, then they wouldn't have an army of bald mutants braying for their blood.

The guns do have a bit of a heft to them
I always thought MW2's weapons felt like toys (one-handing two shotguns seems more difficult than that, not that I would know)

Well...
Sounds like the weightyness is gone in KZ3.
Immediately unsold. Fuck whiners.
it was hard typing that with a straight face

I liked having an FPS which wasn't on steroids all the time.

The mayonnaise in this case being friends who are awesome to play with.
