New laptop for my mother

Sooo, I received a very upset phone call last night asking for help from my mother about her desktop computer. My brother living with her has turned her computer into a potential walking talking lawsuit for the RIAA and the thing is nearly unusable at this point. She was dismayed to find scantily clad women waiving their buttocks at her enticingly as she tried to pay her bills online.

Now clearly, I could go over and wipe the system clean, but that will not solve the problem as it will soon be junked up by th junkie living at home with her (and frankly I do not have the time to be constantly coming over to clean her computer... or to teach her how to).

No, I think my mother needs a laptop she can hide in her room to do bills, respond to chain emails, and surf ebay for vintage china. I could build her a desktop with my eyes closed, but I have no experience at all with laptops. What does she need? Where do we need to go to get it?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Honestly, if you don't have the ability or the inclination to troubleshoot the problems that will inevitably pop up with any system, your best bet is to get her a basic Dell or something and max out the support options. Anything they sell will be plenty good enough for her needs, the prices are very reasonable (Dell always has some sort of sale going on), and when something goes wrong or stops working, she'll be able to get it fixed without involving you. I'd recommend buying from the Small Business line rather than the Home line - the build quality is about the same, but the support tends to be better.

why not just erase all user accounts except for hers and lock out your 'junkie'?

So your mom is going to spend ~500$ on a new laptop and give her PC away to her retarded son who cocked it up in the first place? I think it would be more worthwhile to go for a more long term solution that might lead to a happier family and get her son to behave/get the fuck out.

Anyway, if you do decide on buying a laptop I don't think you'll need anything fancy, one of the big brands should do. I'd dodge HP because they are pretty bad with their customers. I've had good experiences with Dell, but that just might be completely anecdotal.

And make sure that whatever you do you put a password on the computer so retard-o-family-members can't screw things up on a whim.

Do those thumbprint scans actually work? If they do, get one of those.

I would do a reformat of her computer, get it ready for her, make it so only she can use the computer (password), and tell her other son that if he wants to masturbate freely he has to buy his own computer.

Dell Mini 9? They're like $200 right now and will do all the things you describe.

Yea, I'm thinking that a netbook is the way to go here.

    eeePC and such.

I like the password protected account idea. Also, is she running avast or anything? I mean what was this kid doing, d/ling .exes?

Another option would be to put on something like Ubuntu. Kid couldn't put on viruses then.

A third option would be to pay her bills through a virtual machine. But that just seems wrong.

I also came in here to suggest a netbook with Ubuntu on it. Its dead easy to learn the basics.
If she actively changes settings, installs shit, etc, then I would reconsider. This is under the assumption that she knows how to do something in Windows but thinks learning a similar process in anything else is way too hard. Its the "I'm old but I can use a computer" syndrome.

That and you can get a pink Eee.

I imagine doing so would only end up with the mother having to endure unending complaints from the brother about why he can't access the computer.

And this is a problem how? Kid can get his own PC if he wants to.
