So, do *all* HP laptops have asthma?

So here's the deal. I'm looking to get an HP laptop, but I need help on something. Last week, I bought an Inspiron 13 which is now en-route to my house. It was a pretty good deal, and I love the form factor.

But yesterday, a friend threw me this awesome deal on a HP dv5-1135ca, that, for lack of a better wording, is just too good to pass up. It's a 15", but much better specs for about the same price, and HDMI, eSATA, remote control, better speakers.....

The only thing is, my girlfriend has a dv2000 (dv2700), and I *hate* it. It has this fan issue that sounds like the damn thing has asthma.

It's like there's no modulation in the temperature chip, and no leeway buffer. Fan turns on, hits full peak, turns off again. And for what I assume is the length of time it takes for heat to build again -- wait five seconds.

Rinse, repeat.

You can't hear it when the TV is on -- but in a quiet room, it's annoying as fuck:

*quiet room*

*....wheeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeew.....*

*five seconds of silence*

*....wheeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeew.....*

*five seconds of silence*

*....wheeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeew.....*

ad infinitum

While I really, really want to pull the trigger on the HP, there's no way I could stand this.

Obviously, there's a slim chance anyone in here has a dv5 specifically, but can anyone weigh in at all that has a HP laptop? I'm just trying to find out how common the fan thing is through the entire line.

Couldn't you just use SpeedFan or something to set the fan at an acceptable moderate speed?

Does she have an NVIDIA GPU in there? Because I know that's the fix they were prescribing for the "entire 7000-8000 series mobile GPUs failing like mad" - they modified the BIOS fan control to either "Off" or "Full Blast."

You can control it via SpeedFan though.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

    Nope, she's running a 945gm!

That was actually what I was thinking too, I made her bring hers over to my place last night to look at her specs, and see how they compared, the nvidia was what I expected to find, or at least some kind of dedicated card, but yeah, it's a 945. Hence my apprehension.

Not that it kept my NVIDIA GPU from running ~200 degrees in my DV 2000somethingorother. D:

My roommate has a dv6700 that has the same fan-throttle-butterflying. I don't remember noticing it on mine though.

Ugh, I hate what you're talking about. I have some no-name p4 lappy from korea that does it.

    'wheee-EEEEEEEEEEE-eeeeeeeeeeeeeewph!'

That said, the 85xx (8510w I want to say... workstation lappies with firegl cards) I see at work don't do it.

My HP does this too, but its got the nvidia chipset. Its the only reason I'm envious of the Mac users in my classes - they don't have noisy ass fans.

I have a Pavilion dv2945se (the so called 'special edition'), and the GPU fan is practically inaudible--indeed, the laptop is so small it takes some effort to hear any fans, the GPU might not have a fan at all. I think it's a 7150M.

I'm actually using my father-in-law's HP laptop right now (reinstalling and setting everything up on it for him) and it's very well controlled. It's a dv6000 series. If it gets hot, it speeds up, and if it's cool, it slows down. Nothing crazy like what you are describing.

I'm assuming you've checked HP's site for any patches/updates that would fix your fan issue?

Should probably have mentioned mines a dv6000 as well, but who knows the loudness might be associated with heat or use (occasionally I'll notice its doing a virus scan in the background when its really loud)
