So I have a chance to get a desktop tech job

Right now I work for a software company that even if I named it 95% of you wouldn't know what we do. We have niche we perform very well in that niche and make alot of money. I currently work with clients directly supporting 40 or so. It keeps me pretty busy all the time and I get stressed out about work. The job I'm in is a perfect 'jumping off' point to get jobs elsewhere making six figure incomes. I kind of dislike my current job but these other tasty prospects are pretty much all that keep me in it.

Then today a new job posting happend. They are looking for a couple PC techs to work in the building. I would not lose any pay but I would probably end up losing out on those opportunities. Basically my job would be to sit back and wait for something to break, or wait for the boss to tell me to install patches or build a new pc for somebody somewhere.

I've already talked to people and it seems I have a pretty good chance of getting it if I apply, the question is do I give up the potential of other opportunities for this job doing stuff I actually like?

so you have the opportunity to take another job for the same pay that would put you in a significantly worse position in terms of career prospects?

    tough choice.

    I don't understand the question

you've got a boring job but it should lead to better jobs

and you've been offered a non boring job which will go nowhere?

Stick with what you're doing if you believe it will lead to better things.

i still don't understand how a job where you do practically nothing is the non-boring option

How far down the track are these other "opportunities"?

If it's something you can hang in for, then you should probably do that, rather than dead-ending yourself.

I have no problem with leaving a boring job, but only after about 6 months or a year and only if I'm moving forward

I wouldn't leave a good job for a job with less/same money or less/same prospects

You'd get the same money, to lose client-facing, and become an IT-bitch.

That doesn't sound like a good idea. Unless you're a masochist, then by all means, have at it.

    I can see that.

I'd have to perfect the sort of laugh-and-turn-head-to-make-sure-people-were-laughing move.
