    My 60 second opinion:

Midway appears to be interested in selling the franchise for the right price, but they aren't trying to liquidate it.

Any price that they sell it for is likely to reflect the fact that there is continuing work going in to it; it isn't just some rights only thing.

edit: I can't get kotaku to load, so I'm basing my opinion off of the headline of that article.

The Kotaku article basically details that Midway wants to allow the payment of bonuses to Ed Boon during the bankruptcy as they want to retain him and the MK series, which they feel is how they'll be able to repay their debtors.

Man, if only Capcom could obtain the MK series, then we could have Marvel vs Capcom vs MK vs DC and it would be fucking awesome.

Pretty much. During bankruptcy the lawyers dictate who you can and who you can't pay off, and Midway might be frantically trying to convince them to keep paying him.

    Makes sense.

In that case, it looks to me like Midway is doing their best to hang on to the MK series through the bankruptcy because they feel that they can sell it for more money as a seperate transaction than they would get if they liquidated it as part of the bankruptcy proceedings.

That would be awesome! I willing to bet you, with this economy, the stronger player will get it.

Unfortunately, the publisher with the greatest strength to potentially purchase MK is Activision, since they've lost the least money so far in this economy. Capcom might, since they're trying to make more inroads in the western market, but I'd say Activision is more likely than anyone. Anything could happen, though.

So, Mortal Kombat 9? This year? I am NOT getting my hopes up for this game, especially after MK vs DC was disappointing (but still fun) and now that SFIV is out.

Ugh. I loved Deception, but Armageddon and vs. DC were terrible.

I do not have high hopes.

I didn't mind Armageddon. Just wished they had individual fatalities.

There is so much they need to do for this next one and I doubt they will do even half of what is necessary.

Wonder how they would mesh the MK style with the rest of it, or not care and have different ones....

Other possibility would be Nintendo buying it for the next SSB :P

I kinda want to see street fighter go against marvel AND DC AND mortal kombat. It will never happen though.

It would just be nice to have each respective studio have to play by certain rules and make characters that were balanced but make some sort of competitive game on the same disc.

I think it might allow more people to play Pikachu as people might play against him if they could rip Pikachu's heart out.

I'd like to see them develop an MK action adventure game similar to God of War or Devil May Cry.

It's hard to imagine how they could be a profitable company again without Mortal Kombat. They own a lot of classic arcade games but I don't see much potential for most of them outside of cell phones or some such device.

Capcom sounds pretty disinterested; they have an entire stable of fighting game franchises, and expect that someone without an established fighting game franchise would be more likely to go for it. Analysts have suggested such companies that qualify are Activision, EA, and Take-Two.

As for their selling of MK, it sounds like they don't want to, but will if someone ponies up a substantial deal.

That makes more sense than MK vs SF. At least with KI, they actually have robots and monsters and whatnot. They also have finishing moves.

This would indeed be pretty awesome. Imagining an MK vs KI soundtrack is pretty awesome as well.

I wouldn't trust Capcom to take what was at one time their greatest rival franchise to SF2, and not turn it into a complete joke out of spite.

I mean, more of a joke than it had already become :D
