If I purchase this antenna:
Philips High Performance Amplified Indoor Uhf/Vhf/Fm/HDTV Antenna
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ES8EG0/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk
will I still need to hook it up to a converter box to recieve over the air DTV channels?

EDIT: Also can anyone recomend a good antenna? That one has some pretty poor reviews.

    First things first:

Of the projected channels we're supposed to be able to get in my area (Delaware Valley), I don't get half of them. Whether or not this is because the stations aren't broadcasting @ full strength or not I can't say.

However, having needlessly purchased an Antenna and Converter box, I can tell you the following:

    1) If you have an HDTV that's fairly new a DTV tuner is/should have been included standard. IF this is the case, then you don't need to buy a converter box for that TV.

    2) DTV signals can be picked up with your rooftop TV antenna.

If you have a rooftop antenna, and your box has a tuner then you can search for the digital channels. But since the services aren't fully up yet (check your area to confirm) most of the reviews for equipment and access to channels will be limited*. I know in my area I get Digital Fox, CBS, ABC, and "CW" but not NBC or several of the other stations listed as currently broadcasting. NBC for example said they'd stick to the deadline iirc, but they're not available here (I don't get the station with my rooftop or HDTV antenna).

My experience with another "HDTV Antenna" was that it sucked, and I wasted 70 bucks. (As in, the channels listed as actively broadcasting were not receivable). Time will only tell for sure though at this point.

*This link has a list of all the channels that are currently on-air: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvonair.html

See here for your channel assignments/a "better" list: http://www.nab.org/AM/ASPCode/DTVStations/DTVStations.asp

You will need a converter box unless your TV already has a digital tuner. An antenna is just an antenna, it doesn't do any converting of the signal. That particular antenna just happens to include an amplifier to try to boost the signal it's receiving.

What make/model of TV are you using?

Its a huge 35inch JVC CRT made in 1996. Has a bad flyback transistor that needs to be replaced...but thats another story.

    Thanks for the info

If you do need a tuner, you get one free courtesy of the government.

    https://www.dtv2009.gov/

Make sure that you go through one of the government sites/agencies, because there are some scams running to get you to pay for things that you already get free.
