Sita Sings the Blues

The whole movie is now online; the link's below.

What is this, you ask? It's an animated retelling of the Ramayana using the vocals of 1920s jazz singer Annette Hanshaw, interspersed with a very personal story of how the husband of Nina Paley (the film's animator/creator) moved to India and dumped her via email. Also, it has hilarious shadow puppets. You probably won't get to see it in a theater anytime soon, because Nina Paley would have to shell out many thousands of dollars to get the film rights to songs that are 80 years old, which is a special kind of suck. This is why it's online, for free. Enjoy!

Sounds awesome, and the Ramayana is freaking great, so I'll have to try and check this out after work.

Downloaded this a while ago, but never got ground to watching it. Since then Nina resolved the legal issues, and the local student/art-house cinema was running it this week, so we went to see it.

Hilarious movie, and the story and Hanshaw's music were blended seamlessly. I love the concept of social commentary on ancient tales, and I'm happy that it was executed so well.

And really awesome music all around. Hanshaw's, and the Indian stuff.
