Well, it seems my friends have finally given up on DnD.. I really enjoyed the game but there is absolutely nobody i know who plays. I decided to put myself on penandpapergames.com to see if anyone in my area needs an extra player.
So heres my question:
Is it wise for me (I'm 18, still in Highschool) to be attempting to find a game with people i dont know? What should i do in this situation? I really wanna find a group to play with once in awhile, and this seems like my best bet, but then again, i dont wanna be murdered.. ha...ha...
And if this isnt such a good idea, is there any alternative?
A lot of local game stores have groups that play there. I know the ones near me are always glad to get more players. If you've got a game shop near you I would advise checking it out.
Where do you live?
It's possible you've got some fellow PAers in your area who play. A while ago the Critical Failure forum set up a frappr to try to find nearby PA gamers.
Yeah, I just dropped into my local roleplaying and war games shops and asked around when I was looking. I was surprised about how knowledgeable about the local groups people were.

Local hobby game store is definitely the best bet. In my experience, the three consistent things going on in these stores is Warhammer, M:TG and D&D - never seen a store yet that didn't have at least one ongoing campaign going on.
A few of the local gaming stores I've been to even have a whiteboard with a schedule of when things happen, including games with open slots.

With joining random groups, it's not being murdered that you have to worry about so much as playing with a group of people who don't bathe and do longsword exercises in the morning.

Your best bet will be to drop into a local store on a Saturday afternoon and have a few conversations.
Depending on where you're located, meetup.com may or may not have an active group for tabletop games.
I found 2 D&D groups through meetup. 1 lasted 2-3 sessions before it disbanded (everybody moved), the other group I've been with for over a year now.
