More than $70, but I have a T-Fal magiclean that works great. Easy to clean, you can close the lid before you lower the basket and the lid has a filter in it.

Cooks Illustrated recommends (recommended, the article is from 2005):
Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer CF275
$49.99
Testers’ Comments
In the crucial frozen french fry test, this model maintained heat as well as the “professional” fryers. The only model with a window in the lid that did not steam over and become useless. Because the built-in timer will turn off the heat when the set time expires, we recommend using the “stay on” setting and relying on a separate timer.

Well, I only have experience really with the one I have, but I've got no complaints. It maintains it's temperature fairly well, as mentioned with the other model, you close the lid before lowering the basket to avoid splash (I think most recent ones are probably the same) and it's got a filter in it. The basket comes out for easy cleanup as well.
ed: Though I will say that the window in my fryer does steam up and is pretty useless, so if the Rival does have a usable window, it may be a better choice, though at least on Amazon it's no longer being sold.
I really wouldn't worry about a window. Deep frying isn't exactly gourmet cooking here. Throw some shit in. After a few minutes (depending on what it is), open the lid and check the basket. Not done? Throw it back in longer.
