girlfriends and video games

I can't tell you how i did it, but somehow I managed to convince my girlfriend to play a video game with me. Now, what should we play? I am trying to figure it out but I cannot come up with a good one.

I do not want it to be wii sports or something like that. I was thinking more along the lines of castle crashers, a fun two player platformer. Any ideas?

Which system(s) do you have? I'm guessing xbox 360 by the castle crashers suggestion...

Castle crashers is a GREAT game to play, no matter who you're playing with.

Also, look into N+. It's a bit hard at times, but there's only one button you push in conjunction with the joystick (two, if you count the "kill yourself" button, which cuts the learning curve down a little bit. The good thing about the level sets on the game is that in each set of 5, the first is easy, and it slowly gets harder, so you dont feel overwhelmed from the beginning.

Another great game is puzzle quest. It starts off simple, and then gets more challenging as you go on. It's basically Bejewled and an RPG had a baby. Great fun, since a big part of the outcome is luck.

I somehow got my girlfriend to start playing halo with me, and we're slowly working our way into L4D. I have no idea how this happened, but I am happy about it

Mario Kart? I'm trying to think what games I first played. Golden Eye, back in the day, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Mario Kart, some of the Mario Party games... but then I started playing stuff like American McGee's Alice and Diablo on PC.. and some Halo. >_>

Like everything else in your relationship, the best advice is going to be tailored to your girlfriend, not my generic impression of what your girlfriend is probably like. Most people would probably not guess from looking at my blond-haired, blue-eyed preppy elementary school counselor and special ed instructor that the one videogame she can't get enough of is Vampire: The Masquerade.

Crash: Mind Over Mutants is pretty fun.
    Castle Crashers is good.
    The old girl standby: Tetris.

The game that really got me stuck on shooters was Gears of War 1. It might not be for your girl, but you never know. Chainsawing people made me happy in a way no videogame ever had. Plus the controls aren't super hard.
You can always try Army of Two as well.
And House of the Dead for Wii...Tho I recommend keeping it on easy and HOD3 for starting off.

You might want to try a site like Gamefly so you can try lots of different games without investing a huge amount till she finds her niche.
And if you both have decent computers, you can try springing her into an MMO that's kinda cutesy like Domo or Flyff... (Flyff was my gateway drug to MMOs.)

My girlfriend won't play any game that doesn't involve killing Nazi's generally. Any WW2 shooter will do, however. She also got hooked on CoD4 for a bit.

So... yeah. Exactly what everyone said. It's going to really, really depend on the person in question.

Lego Games (Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Batman) depending on which universe she (or you) likes the best.

My g/f loves them. They are kinda like the movies, have their own sense of humour and you can die a million times and still beat the levels.

Mario Kart, Rock Band, GH, Tetris. If she's not used to playing video games at all, those are probably good ones. I've found that it helps to get someone into a game by showing them how you + other people can get excited by playing them. Seeing that excitement might make them interested in joining the fun!

You also might want to take into account what kinda books she reads..? It could give you an insight into what kinds of games she might enjoy. Fantasy books = maybe something rpg-y, but various Mario games tend to generally just be lots of fun. And Castle Crashers -is- awesome, and isn't exactly hard to learn how to play.

Do have Katamari? I grew up playing Mario Bros but after the Nintendo died I stopped playing for about 10 years. Katamari was one of the first games I played and loved it.

My bf and I play Justice League Heroes together on his PS2. Once I finally find the time we'll be booting up House of the Dead for my Wii. We love playing it in the arcade so it seemed like a natural progression. We play Smash Bros and Mario kart a lot too. Personally I hate FPS but that's only because I suck at them.

Since you have a Wii why not download some games? Donkey Kong Country brings back fond childhood memories.

My fiance and I have played through all of the Halo games, Gears of War 1 & 2, Diablo 2 + Exp, Guild Wars, and we've started Left 4 Dead. There are many more that don't come to mind right now.

I guess what I'm saying is, not that you are, but don't get the idea in your head that it has to be a cutesy game or "friendly" for girls. Pick a good co-op game, go with that. You know her interests better than us, find something she might like.

In my experience turned based games not all about war can be a good thing. Sim City, Civilization, Railroad Tycoon...

Also of course anything coop on easy difficulty might be a good start.

If you had a PS3 then Little Big Planet would be THE game to play. Maybe an old school platform game like Vikings would be an idea.

Overall keep gameplay somewhat simple or turn based. Plus not to violent.

I'm going to agree that it really does depend on the girl. Her interests and what not. Castle Crashers is probably a good place to start as others have mentioned.

I personally am a fan of beat games. Rockband, DDR, Guitar Hero, etc. Puzzles games are usually a good choice also (Tetris and the like). I'm currently terribly addicted to Geometry Wars and Braid.

If you have a Wii I recommend Mario Kart or Mario Party if you're looking for something to play together.

I believe the Lego games were also mentioned. If she has an interest in Star Wars, Batman, or Indiana Jones one of these would be great to play together. My boyfriend isn't really a big into gaming but loves Lego Star Wars.

Careful with Mario Party - it forces you to play AGAINST her, which might not be fun for her if she's not initially into video games. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but just be careful if she's a competitive person. Try to pick a cooperative game if you can.

If you've got an account at a rental joint/Gamefly, invite her to pick out a few possibilities. Get them, take them home, and play them.

Don't make the mistake of picking games YOU'd like her to play, let her pick and choose what she feels like playing.

Careful of these games though (the lego ones) because while Lego Star Wars was awesome, Lego Indiana Jones is INFURIATING for my girlfriend. The camera angles are terrible for platforming sequences, particularly on Temple of Doom.

My best luck so far with girlfriend gaming has been Castle Crashers. We tried the LEGO games and she would get annoyed if I managed to collect more stuff than her (even though its shares what we collect). Also some of the platforming is quite annoying even though death doesn't really matter.

She also really liked helping me play Puzzle Quest (XBLA version - she would help spot skulls, etc). Likewise we teamed up to play Interpol (seek & find game), which she later played on her own as she really enjoyed it.
