[OFF] Stalker: Oblivion Lost - It is the Will of the Zone to self-evaluate once more

I am going to be honest, folks: this isn't going to work out. It's certainely not that I don't want to do an LP - far from it, I am quite eager to demonstrate and explore the wonderful changes that Oblivion Lot makes to Stalker - but rather methinks it's because I can't - that is, can't bring you an LP that I myself find satisfactory.

I actually have all the videos for the next two segments shot and waiting processing, but the actual act of attempting to process them has made me realize two things:

A) I am way too much of a defensive player to make a good-looking VLP - I'm the kind of guy that ducks around, checks around corners, sprints from one side of the field to the other in order to get a fix on the enemy's position. I find it boring (to watch afterwards, anyway) which means people are going to find it boring, and I've too much goddamn pride and decency to upload that sort of shit.
B) I am too much of a goddamn perfectionist when it comes to capturing and editing material. While I could certainely edit out all of the ducking and dodging and everything else I do, the results would look like choppy 1.5-second-transition'd ass. Then there is the matter of setting up the shots in-game - not in the "damn it, I got hit, QUICK-LOAD!" sense, but rather the "OK, I killed him, but it was kinda' boring, QUICK-LOAD! OK, that kill looked good, but now there's way too much time between that guy and the next enemy encounter, QUICK-LOAD! OK, I've got a nice steady stream of decent-looking act-WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THE FRAMERATE, QUICK-LOAD!!!" and in my eyes it all looks like shit.

Despite all this whining, though, I'm not going to throw in the towel. Not quite, anyway. Rather, all this is pointing towards another evaluation of what the hell I'm doing and where this thing is headed, and I've got a pretty darn good idea of just where that is.

You'll forgive the drama, but I figured I at least owe some kind of explanation for what the hell is going on, rather than letting this just fade into obscurity by running away.

Not bad so far, but if you intend to make us read, upload somewhere that has a HD option, like Youtube. It's hard to read little white/yellow blocks

Didn't work, huh? Rats. I'll see if I can do a Full Size recording without Fraps murdering my PC and work at getting that to 800x600.

True, but the ten-minute limit annoys me to hell and back. I'm gonna' see if maybe Vimeo will work once I finished editing the re-shoots.

Aw, man, VLP with little commentary is not as cool.
Seriously, it makes the thing much more interesting

Yessf, but do you really want to lissfen to thissf voice going throughout the whole video? Methinks not - and it's not so much that there's going to be little commentary as it is that I'm not going to be cracking lines left and right - I know of quite a lot of stuff I want to sound off on.

Anyway, I've reshot in a larger size and tried hosting this on Vimeo, but it didn't survive the conversion as well as I'd hoped, so skip the player and go right to the original file. And how do you folks want me to do that carpark attack?

Man, but it's been a while since I've gone through with OL. They finally got closed captioning working with the Russian dialogue, huh? Somehow I find this more fascinating than half the other stuff they put in there.

Anyway, commentary or no I wouldn't mind seeing more of this. If you can get in a high enough definition, a text overlay or sidebar of some sort might be a reasonable alternative to spoken commentary at times. There are a lot of ground rules to cover with the Zone, and doubly so for Oblivion Lost, but you're doing a good job so far.

I usually bring the guys along to hit up the car park, just because I like getting into progressively larger gunfights where possible. Duty and the Mercs in Wild Territory usually slugged it out all over the map. But I digress; one vote for bringing them along.

If you folks were wondering why I haven't done anything with this in several days, it's not at all that I've abandoned it - rather, the past few days have been a time of reflection, if you will. I think we can agree that I got this thing started off on the wrong foot - one poorly-done, content-thin video with nothing to entice you folks - and I can't help but feel a little bit shameful about it.

Doing this LP video by video isn't going to work, methinks: not for me, not for you, not for anybody. The substance and entertainment provided by such isn't going to be nearly enough to make all the effort worthwhile, and therefore I'm re-tooling this bugger. I'm going to take my time, I'm going to gather up a good bulk of stuff for you folks, I'm going to refine it as best I can, and I'm going to release it at sensical intervals.

I'm actually rather dissipointed with it, to be honest - it does some of the stuff, but it seems to be hit-or-miss, because of the limited range on activating them you don't get translations for loud-but-distant stuff like the military commander, and it generalizes some stuff - I'm pretty sure that what some stalkers are saying isn't quite [laughter].

Thank you for the vote o' confidence (and the vote for action) though I'm afraid that my change in views regarding how I'm doing this LP means that choice has to be taken away (though to be honest I'm pretty sure it's the only choice like that you even get in the game, so the loss is minimal) although with Stalker's AI you never quite know what's gonna' happen...
