Turning off video on an iPod Touch

iPod Touch v2.2.1

Video podcasts.

I want to turn off the screen to conserve battery but still listen to said podcast. I used to be able to hit the sleep button but now it stops the audio/video.

Am I out of luck?

Most podcasts tend to release mp3 versions as well. Have you tried that?

If nothing else, you could just lower the screen brightness all the way. There is a noticeable improvement in battery life when I go from 90% brightness to 50%, so I'm sure being at 1% brightness would help stop the drain.

Yeah, but I want the video option there for that podcast. The podcast specifically is Diggnation. Many times throughout the episode they are showing visuals that simple will not make sense with the MP3 version but since I'm listening to this at work it's kind of a waste of battery to have it sitting on my desk playing video I'm not looking at.

    Oh well, thanks anyway!

Slight 1 month necrobump, but I think it's justified since I accidentally found a trick to achieve this today, and remembered this thread.

It's a bit of a hack, but it works. What you want to do is create a new playlist that starts with something that is audio only, and then after the audio track add the video, or video podcasts, that you want to listen to (but not watch). Skip forward to the last 10 seconds or so of your audio-only track and then press your iPhone or iPod Touch's power/sleep button to turn the screen off before the audio-only track finishes. Now when the video track starts to play the screen will stay off but it's audio continues :)

On my touch I can do the following:

    1) Start the video.
    2) Click the sleep/screen off button on the top. This will stop the video playback
    3) Double press the select button to bring up the screen-locked audio controls.
    4) Press Play.

I only found out I could do this a few days ago at work, so it might be a newer feature.
