Planning on taking a week long trip to Italy sometime in the fall, most likely in September. Wanted to see if anyone has had experience in learning Italian in a non-classroom environment. And if it can be helped, I'd like to steer away from Rosetta Stone. Shit be expensive, yo.
I've used Rosetta Stone, and it is pretty cool. However, I used Pimsler Speak and Read Essensial Italian 1 and 2, just listening to the tapes. I liked that a lot, but I can't say that I'd do well in Italy, cause I didn't go through the entire program on either.

EDIT: That was snarky. Rosetta Stone is the top tier language software these days. Nothing beats actually having someone to speak to, though.
Thanks for the suggestion guys. I actually found a couple podcasts that might suffice, but I predict I'll be biting the bullet to get the RS.
