Ey all. Making this thread to post the eventual progress of a comic I'm doing for my narrative class.
Its roughed for 48 pages (will probably go up a few more), and there's about 40-ish days left until I graduate. This means I gotta crank out at least 1 page a day, and a couple every other day and weekends. Hopefully this thread will help me keep on track, and maintain my sanity.
315 is a simplistic action-oriented military fiction, following the adventures of four-man crew of a tank destroyer. 315 uses very little to no dialogue (I have yet to figure out exactly what format to use, but ill run that past you guys when I get there.) It's the spiritual successor to the series of war comics I made last semester.
Current pages
And for those who missed 'em, here's a few development pics.
I guess a page a day is really kindve the industry standard. Ive watched my roommate deteriorate into a sleep deprived maniac trying to do 26 pages in 19 days. But that was from lay out to final.
Good luck man. It looks good so far, and youve already got the hard shit out of the way.
This will be a very impressive portfolio piece when you get around to showing it.
Did you intentionally leave some room for speech bubbles. overall you are communicating things well. I would exaggerate facial features on the males, like noses and ears, so they fit better with their mini bodies. it's how they get metal slug to work.

I saw these in the hall at school on display (I go to Sheridan, I'm a fundies student). I liked that you had a whole display case to yourself, haha.
jpeg on
so I just type in this box and it goes on the screen?

I think i said this last time you posted some of your comic stuffs, but the size of their head just seem to be in this weird limbo between just right and too large. I think this might be way too late in the process to change it and it would probably be for the best if you continued with the current style until this project is over.
But this is something that just irks me because the characters don't quite feel cartoony and they don't quite feel real either. They're stuck in the middle and I don't think I like that much...
But, if the writing is as good as the set of comics you posted awhile back, I'll be more than forgiving for now.
To me those effects read as sounds in the distance. .Things are harder to hear from far away.. Look at the panel. You are looking over the shoulder of a guy a pretty good distance from the hill top. All the firing is coming from the top of the hill.
Ah now that I'm on my computer I can elaborate I bit more.
Your style is just so well suited to comics, I would buy a book of this stuff so damn hard. Now that I think about it, it's kinda strange there aren't tons of Metal Slug type war comics because that would be rad.
The muted colors are perfect for this type of project and the line variation you use really makes the forground elements pop out at my eyeballs.
I don't mind the small sound fx in the first page because they're off in the distance as someone mentioned. They could probably be outlined in a darker color though because the yellow makes it pretty hard to even notice they're words.

I'd love to see some of your process -- is it mostly drawn straight to tablet from scanned pencils, or do you ink anything by hand?
Except for that bottom house-fight scene, that was inked by hand (but drawn digitally)
Any chance we could get a quick rundown of your process? Is this all done in Photoshop with a tablet? Size? Brand?
But your sketchbooks are always totally awesome.

So are the dimensions of each of these images different? How come you didn't just do a book style format?

If and when I get this printed into a book, there will be two per print, then I can just cut it in half and get 2 books.
can you do one about Voytek the Soldier Bear?
You see, he's a soldier
that is also a bear
also, he is true
(more info)
hes actually choking on it in the last panel.
But how is the lack of dialogue working for you guys? is it clear whats going on?
