Anyone else playing this browser based zombie apocolypse themed MMORPG? I only recentley discovered it and frequentley find myself logging back in every few hours to see what's happening, shoot some zombies, raid some buildings, get mauled by zombies, die, wake up as a shambling corpse then go try and feed on some survivors. For those who have no idea what the game is about.
What's this game about?

You're a citizen of Malton, a city that's in the process of being evacuated and quarantined to contain a sinister contagion - you play as either a trapped civilian, a member of the evacuating military, a scientist operating in the background, or a victim of the early outbreaks.

Malton is a grid of 100x100 city blocks, each of which is either a nondescript street, or a particular type of building - you move around the map by clicking on the names of the blocks. Buildings can be entered and barricaded by survivors, to shelter from the zombie hordes that roam the city.

Other citizens of Malton appear on the map as names in coloured boxes (the colour matching their class; green for Military, blue for Science, red for Civilian and grey for Zombie); they also appear in the location's description.

Some character classes start with equipment, and all characters can search to find further objects during the course of the game - some are weapons, some are one-use items, others have subtler or more permanent effects. All characters start with at least one Skill, which grants them an extra ability or bonus in the game - by gaining experience points, players can buy further skills and develop their characters.

Players get fifty "actions" per day - these are be used to move, attack, search or otherwise interact with the city. When your action points are gone, you have to wait for them to recharge. (Players remain visible and vulnerable on the map when they're out of Action Points or logged out; survivor players should find secure shelter between logins.)

What should I be doing?

It's up to you how to play the game, but as a general guidline: as a survivor, you should search the city for helpful equipment, and for other people to team up with. You'll be quite vulnerable to begin with, so don't risk drawing too much attention to yourself (some higher-level zombies have the ability to follow a survivor that's attacked them and run away), and make sure that you're safely hidden in a building that's either secured or barricaded, when you've finished for the day.

Existence as a zombie is rather simpler. It can be a good idea to find a horde at the end of the day, though - a lone zombie is a much easier target for a passing zombie hunter.

(There are some more in-depth player guides in the Wiki.)

In short, think Kingdom of Loathing crossed with your average Romero zombie flick. The game is extremley simple to pick up, is perfect just to check up on and play every few hours/whenever you like and pretty fun. I'm currentley wandering about as a shambling corpse under the name 'Dagonkick' in the Godfry Building in the Wykewood district. Feel free to get a cheap kill on me while I sleep tonight ;)

It would be fairly sweet if we could get a team going and start an effective hunting party, discussing moves the team should make in the thread then executing them at around the same time of the day. No need to be avaliable at any specific time, just play your move, report back to the thread with your status and updates and requests for help and such and we shall see how it goes.

The playstlye could be as simple as one forumer making his moves of the day, reporting back here on the forum when he's done then the next forumer using his action points and so on and so on, making descisions on wether we should barricade, rest up and recharge action points for 24 (realtime) hours, go and hunt down zombies, try to grab some supplies, ask for medical assistance, etc. For example, I'm a zombie now, and can be turned back into a human if treated by a special class, so if anyone could create a Nanotech Lab assistant and find me the cure, that would be great :)

If there is any intrerest in this when I wake up tomorrow, I'll probably make a new character so we can get a team going, or even better, I can give you an extra pistol and a knife if you un-zombify me :P

Man, I was hooked on this for a while. I'm Samuel King, and I'm the zombie inside the Mountain Motel in Lerwill Heights. I'd appreciate a revive if anyone could help. We should get a PA group back together.

Yeah I quite enjoyed UD for the time I played, but honestly there is a complete upper limit on the game. I got to the point with multiple characters where I literally did everything there was in the game to do.

Anyone remember when the PA forums was unstoppable at Urban Dead? That was a number of years ago, but god damn did I have fun then. Some of the most fun I've ever had playing online was playing with you guys defending Giddings mall from wave after wave of zombies.

I think I might rejoin just for nostalgia's sake.

So you couldn't spend all day jacking people when they log off.

    Plus strategy etc.

So to get all your AP back you have to just sit inside a building and wait till tomorrow? There isn't a timer or anything?

When you log out it tells you that AP refreshed at 1 point every 30 minutes.

I guess. It's just hard to remember or even want to come back to a game that limits how much I can play when basically none of my other games do that.

    Ah okay cool thanks guys.

anoffday you haven't played much browser RPGs then. They do that everywhere now. Mob Wars/Gangster Wars on facebook does it too. Usually to get people to buy a "stamina refresh" for like $2.

I remember when they first introduced the second suburb "Monroeville" as a tie-in to Diary of the Dead. It was perma-death for humans and headshot zombies and a bunch of people I just stumbled across in the middle of nowhere and I decided to fortify a farm and see how long we could hold out. It was all good until the headshotted zombies started coming back to life.

The Cat Preservation Society survived for approximately four weeks after that before being claimed by the hordes. Manor Farm was swiftly destroyed as the last survivors fled.

It's been so long since I played a browser based game like this, the last one I really played was Monarchy.

    edit:

Seems like the top right / bottom are the safest sreas. I spent this life getting revive syringes and I now have six. I'm in the Wortley Building - Earletown. The Ames Plaza just outside is a revive point and there's a hospital right beside it. Seems like a good place to start since healing people gets you exp. There's also several fire stations in the suburb and I imagine at least one will be lit making getting a fire axe (pretty much needed at early levels when shooting is useless) much easier. If anyone is getting close to the suburb let me know and I'll try to get to you to revive you.

Just got my new character, Kyle Adler, into Earletown. Passed out in front of Ethelsomething General Hospital. I'll make my way over to Ames tomorrow since it's due east, but I'll probably need a revive, since I'm going to be standing in the middle of nowhere til tomorrow.

Well, damn. I saw the UD thread link and went "Well, that one has to be months old, since I last played UD, like a year ago."

The 8th? Shit, I'm gonna have to go over there. Sorry, but it does seem like a more appropriate place. I figure it'd be better for us to flock there, anyway.

Can't say that I have. Just a friend of mine was a massive Jim O'Rourke fan and when I was making my character (a fair while ago) it was one of the few names I could think of. My other guy was called Asa Leventhal.

You get revivcation needles at Necro Tech buildings (only one in Earlytown is the place where I'm at) but I think you need a skill to revive dead folks.

Well, time to go to the other UD thread!
