Why the hell isn't Steam working? It's never done this...

It wouldn't let me install any games anymore, saying it couldn't connect to the servers. Assumed this was because they were overloaded from the free UT3 weekend. That wasn't it. Follow the advice from this thread:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

And ran msconfig and started my PC up with Microsoft stuff only. Now I can't even connect to Steam.
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7579-RPSX-6098

I have no firewall activated. Router has never been a problem. Steam updated recently. I can't think of anything else.

It all started when I bought World of Goo and then logged in and out of Steam. Now I can't d/l or even get Steam running.

Any ideas?

Checking the Steam forums seems to indicate that you're not alone in this. Several people have been unable to connect to the Steam servers since the latest client update, or at least since 3/8/09. It seems like people are taking all kinds of measures, from uninstalling and reinstalling Steam, clearing cache, and disabling firewalls - all the way to complete reformats. Nothing seems to be working for these folks, so take measures at your own risk.

I'd hang tight and put in a Steam support ticket - along side an email to Gabe himself. He usually sees them, and alerting him to the issue as it stands might light a fire under it.

Well, that's good to hear (kind of).

Thanks for pointing that out, should've cleared it up myself.
