The Resident Evil on Wii Thread: Darkside Chronicles looks pretty decent.
With Resident Evil 5 coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this week, many Wii owners are feeling a little left out. The only Resident Evil action the console has seen thus far is a light gun shooter and a port of Resident Evil 4 which originally appeared on the GameCube. But it looks like Wii owners now have something to get excited about, as Capcom has revealed a brand new game in the series exclusive to the Wii.
The news comes via the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (translated by Kotaku). The new game, called Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, appears to be a light gun shooter in the same vein as The Umbrella Chronicles, which also came to the Wii. The game will be set in the same period as Resident Evil 2, which takes place in a Raccoon City overrun with zombies.
Other than the setting, little is known about the game. In fact, we're still not sure that it is going to be released outside of Japan, though since Umbrella Chronicles was released worldwide, it seems likely. Many gamers may be upset that the Wii is getting a light gun game instead of a "real" entry in the survival horror series, but keep in mind that as House of the Dead: Overkill has shown us, light gun shooters can be great on the Wii if done well. Stay tuned to OT for more details as they come up.
How does everybody feel about getting another RE rail shooter? Excited? Disappointed? On the one hand I thought that Umbrella Chronicles was awesome, and I put over thirty hours into it; on the other hand, RE4: Wii Edition was spectacular and I would really like to see that gameplay style/mechanic used again, especially in a RE2 setting. I know that they switched RE:UC from a third person perspective into a rail shooter because they figured that the over the shoulder gameplay was too tough for casual gamers (and by extension less profitable) but didn't RE4: Wii Edition sell really well?
Anyway, discuss.
[Edit] Also, I'm aware that Dead Rising: Chop 'Till You Drop plays like RE4: Wii Edition but I'm still on the fence about that one. I'ma go rent it eventually, after this crazy-ass semester is all over and done with.
I really liked UC so this is awesome news for me. And with RE5 coming out in a couple days I don't mind a "side story" game like this. RE4 on the Wii was fun, but UC was fun for two people, which is, like, twice as many.
I'm intrigued; I'm not a big franchise fan (save RE4, but that's the anomaly), but if it plays well, I would check this out. Though I still haven't gotten HOTD Overkill or even the original RE: UC.
And maybe if this one sells well too, they will make a proper Resident Evil game on the Wii.
Or in other words "fuck you Capcom"
Oh, come now. Capcom has proven this gen that they're all about pollenating different things across all of the systems, and if you expected them to work on two separate "proper" RE games at the same time, I think you were only deluding yourself. Light-gun rail shooters are the new hotness now, anyway; Perfect Shots ahoy!
I know that a ton of people are irritated because RE4 Wii controlled like a dream, but let's not retcon the fact that RE4 was still a fucking awesome game on the GC, even with Ye Ancient Analog Sticke.
I didn't pick up RE until I found the RE:Make on the cube for dirt cheap, gave it a spin a loved it. Over the next few years I worked my way through the entire series seeing as it was handily availble on that one platform. Code Veronica was alright, but so very cookie cutter RE that I was getting a bit bored with the formula by then.
One day I'll get around to playing 4 (come on Goozex) and I'm sure my passion will reignite.
UC was awesome, but I wonder if there are potentially only so many light gun zombie games one system needs... The lack of RE2 in UC suggests this has been in the works for quite some time however.

Resident Evil 4 is the best game in the series.
Well Resident Evil 5 could be better but i don't think thats out yet.

You shame me Lunker... You've still not purchased RE:UC AND HOTD Overkill?
I know! I had Ghost Squad for a while, but traded it so I could shift up to a DSi. I definitely want Overkill but was on the fence about the original RE:UC. Again, I know little about the series, so the whole lore aspect was kind of lost on me, but was the game good otherwise? I thought people were to it when it released, but maybe they were just butthurt over not getting an RE4-ish game.

If you've got a friend it's pretty awesome. Hell I don't think it really tells much lore of RE, it's just cool to see the RE characters in a light gun game.
I would say they need to do a 2Emake (yah, that's right... 2 = R in this case), but that would be a piss-poor idea for the Wii. The system doesn't do HD well, at ALL. In this day and age, that is a crime. It would be even worse if they were to make a game with the equivalent "beauty" of REmake only to hamstring it with technical limitations like that.
Even if they never make a "proper" RE for the Wii, they really should make something other than a flat-out shooter. Something like Metroid Prime would be a breath of (badly needed) fresh air for the series. And it could be a Wii exclusive. You're not gonna sell Wii's with an on-rails shooter, I'm sorry. RE Prime would actually make me think about it without dismissing the idea out of hand.
Er, yah, I don't own a Wii, so I'm just commenting from an outsider's perspective.
The thing is, Fawst, CAPCOM isn't worried about selling Wii's, it's worried about selling its game. Plus if the REmake was beautiful, why couldn't the Wii do the same for RE2. Remember that it's got prerendered backgrounds, so it can make it look gorgeous.
Why do people say the word "HD" as if it's something other than any resolution 720p and over?
"HD" doesn't mean you'll have high quality textures and models. I could produce the shittiest looking game in the world and as long as it runs in 720p it's technically "HD".
The fact that the Wii is locked at 480p doesn't mean that developers have to use 32x32 textures (or even 256x256), nor does it mean they can't use a lot of shaders (in fact the Wii can push lots of shaders, though it takes work to make them since you have to use a fixed function pipeline). Maybe people think no HD means no physics? Sorry resolution has nothing to do with how fast, efficient, and accurate your physics simulations are.
I think maybe people are just upset they purchased a tv with a poor upscaler and don't want to admit it.
Also if they make something like RE:UC, but possibly more in-depth and in the RE:2 setting I'll probably be sold. It will have to feel significantly different from current zombie-shooting light gun offerings though or I don't think I'll be able to justify the cash.
RE: UC was a solid rental for me over a long weekend, but that was it. It was nice to get a taste of Resident Evil goodness to tide me over until RE5 came out, but it wasn't a game that I would value beyond a rental. Why Capcom would want to re-hash RE: UC again is beyond me.
I was mixing up thoughts. What I meant to say is that they've already gone to the well when it comes to RE shooters. They should probably try something new. As for selling Wii's, I know that's not Capcom's problem, but Nintendo would probably be happier with something that's really going to draw a crowd.
And no, they can't make an RE2make look gorgeous. They can make it look very good. Gorgeous would be 720p at the very least. Back when REmake came out, not many people had A) an HDTV, a Cube with component output, or C) the component cable if they had B. REmake was beautiful, for its time, but my main point is that in an HD world, 480p is merely passable at this point. It was a bad design decision by Nintendo in the first place, but that's a conversation for another time. Unfortunately, it means that while they could certainly make a game on a level with REmake (if not actually exceeding it, something I certainly agree could be done), it wouldn't be as good as it should be. At least, not to me.
As reported earlier here at IGN Wii, Capcom's big Resident Evil surprise for Wii owners turned out to be Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles, a sequel to the gun shooting game Umbrella Chronicles. Since posting that initial report, more details on the game have come our way from Famitsu.
Darkside Chronicles takes place in Resident Evil 2's Racoon City. It's September 29, 1998, and the city has turned to hell due to the effects of the T-virus. Players take control of Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy to deal with the undead in Umbrella Chronicles forced scrolling style.
Famitsu got a bit of commentary on the title from producer Masachika Kawata at Capcom and producer Kentaro Noguchi at Cavia, the game's development house.
The reason the game is not called Umbrella Chronicles 2, the two revealed, is that the enemy is no longer Umbrella Corporation. Additionally, the term "darkside" can be taken to mean that the game will provide a look at some of the unexplored areas of the RE story, along with the darker passages of the characters' histories. The game will also have more of a horror taste than the first.
While the two wouldn't state the specific titles that will be covered in the game, they did confirm that scenarios from games other than RE2 will definitely make the cut. Expect to see a variety of characters, including RE2's Shelly Birkin.
The general concept may be similar to Umbrella Chronicles, but the two producers stressed that the feel will be like that of a new game. One point of note is the "feeling of being there" that the game promises to offer, thanks to skilled camera work, some nice visual effects, and the fact that you can see your partner character on the screen in front of you. The game will also make use of the Havoc engine for realistic physics.
On the gameplay side of things, the two producers explained that replayablity is one of the focuses. However, they're also aiming to make the game more accessible as far as difficulty is concerned. Expert shooters needn't worry, though, as plans call for the dynamic difficulty system of RE4 and RE5 to be implemented here, meaning better players will end up with a tougher experience.
Your in-game partner character, who, as detailed above, will now be shown on the screen in front of you, is a key to playing the game. It appears that you'll only see the partner character on the screen during single player mode, though. Two player mode will leave nothing but glass between you and your undead foes.
RE: Darkside Chronicles is currently 35% complete and is without a final release date. Expect to hear more on the game from Capcom in the near future.
This sounds very cool, actually. I can mildly sympathize with people who wanted another RE4, but as an on-rails shooter this could be awesome if it plays right.
Why does everyone want a RE2 remake so much? I've not played all the old style Resident Evil games, I've only played 1,2 and 3 (3 was with Jill right?). Was 2 better then ones i've missed out on?
I love RE:UC probably more than anyone else here, maybe with the exception of honky or slash
Neogaf is shitting themselves with complaints about another on rails shooter.
I feel that UC is one of the deepest (non-score based) light gun games around. If you wanted to blow down horde after horde, this isnt the game. Youre looking for House of the dead or ghost squad. This game was far from an arcade game, but more console based. The crit point system took accuracy and skill. Randomized health for most zombies helped too, melee action and QTEs broke up the level monotony. Good enemy variety and TONS of unlockables for replayability (my 100% file colelcted clocked in at about 37 hours without unlocking infinite weapons.)
My guess to the sequel is that they built an engine from the ground up with a limited budget, it sold 1.5 million and counting without universally dropping in price. Wouldnt you want to try that again, but this time with an already built engine cutting dev time down so resources can go from R&D to art and design?
Why people hate on rails shooters is beyond me. It might not be your cup of tea i take it. Was UC a perfect game? Nope (bullshit crimson head and hunter invulnerability during attack animations)
Was it fun? Yep
It was day one for RE:UC, and its gonna be day one for RE: DC
Let's see, on the one hand we have a half dozen solid zombie-blasting lightgun games. On the other, we have an RE4 Wii port and the horribly received DR:Wii abortion. Why oh why might people be dissapointed that we STILL don't have a single decent original RE4 Wii style game?

Not that this doesn't look good, but bring another traditional RE back to the system.
Or another REmake, one of the two.
RUMOR has it that they're looking at touching up Code Veronica for the Wii.
With a tie in with the star wars pre-prequels to feature Darth Really Bad Guy.
I have the Dreamcast version, but I've never played X, so that's a good start.
Yep, same here, so let's hope that rumor turns into something.

Given the amount of content for UC, this has the potential to be excellent, and I'm never dissapointed about more additions to this series.
