Reviews!
Well, I just got in from the Fresno "Watchmen" screening. Actually, let me re-phrase that: I just got in from seeing the first hour of the "Watchmen" screening. That's all I could take. (The movie is almost three hours long, for those of you who don't know.)
Let me say right up front: I haven't read the graphic novel that "Watchmen" is based on, so I'm not one of those fanatics who've been drooling for months, waiting for this film.
Before we go any further... let me ask: What have people been going to see at their neighborhood multi-plex this year? Light-hearted comedies like "Paul Blart, Mall Cop" and "Madea goes to Jail." In tough economic times, people are making it clear: they want to laugh at the movies.
Anyway... you can forget about laughs in "Watchmen." Obviously, it's not a comedy. But it THIS what I want to pay to see at the movies?
In just the hour I saw:
A women being beaten and brutalized.
A graphic rape scene.
A pregnant woman shot and killed at close range (by a superhero!).
Several people burned to death with flame-throwers.
Jeez... and you wonder why I walked out???
Now listen... I understand that I'm not in the demographic this movie is aimed at. So who is in that demographic, I wonder? Who finds those things I just mentioned - entertaining? Kinda scary, if you stop to think about it.
Will "Watchmen" be number one this weekend? Without question. (It's the only movie opening this Friday.) $70-million some experts are predicting for the box office haul.
Me? I'm thinking about another visit with Mr. Blart or Madea.

A guy at work was all "This girl I work with convinced me not to see Watchmen, because she thought it was the worst movie ever. What do you think?"
This was after I had seen it, two nights previous. I convinced him to watch it, and to decide what his opinion was for himself.

To be fair, the graphic rape scene is the scene where the woman gets beaten and brutalized.

I'm just wondering if this guy noticed the R rating, on the way in. I know that the people who brought their little kids in, expecting a Spiderman type movie, certainly didn't.

Going to see this for the fourth time tomorrow.
Also that pic is pretty cool.
Sounds like they shoiulda stuck with Madea.

Also, Considine could have done a great turn as Rorschach but I think the final cast are probably the best.
Well, he is a doctor
