So I unlocked my iPhone and was able to get an iPhone modem program onto it for tethering. But when I went to use it yesterday, I couldn't access the Settings in the helper program on my Mac, and therefore couldn't actually use it. Has anyone else encountered problems using the iPhone modem program on theirs?

Try PDA Net, it's what I use. It calls for you to set up an ad-hoc wireless network, not tether.

How user friendly is it? I'm not great at setting up stuff that requires a lot of technical expertise.
Is it okay to talk about this kind of stuff on these boards? It's bad juju in two different ways- unlocking your iPhone and breaking your terms of service by tethering it to your computer.

I asked that the last time I had a jailbreak question. I'm not asking about pirating software, and I don't think anyone (who doesn't work for AT&T) gives a shit.
EDIT: About TOS, I mean. But I'll try PDANet and see how it works for me, thanks. I'd like to keep this thread open, though, if I have any more questions, as I'm sure I will.

Basically you click on the Airport icon on your Mac, and tell it you want to join/create a computer-to-computer network, and provide it with the details (MultimoogAdHoc or whatever, use a password, you don't want other using your AT&T Data Plan)
Then you go to the iPhone wifi settings and join the new adhoc network
Then you fire up PDA Net, it should tell you that it's working and give you some stats. Surf away.
Be aware, that the iPhone Data Plan, while "Unlimited" has a line item for excessive use which is defined, I think, right around 5 GB a month, so this should not be your exclusive connection. But for hopping online here and there it's great.

THIS is some very good takeaway advice. One of the reasons I got the phone was so I could get cheaper DSL (I was on Comcast cable before they raised their prices to absurdity) and spread usage around between the two services while having a fucking kickass phone. Mainly this means while I'm at a coffee shop or anyplace that doesn't have free internet available, but it still helps subsidize that $30/mo data fee. I use about 1GB of that monthly allotment surfing heavily on my phone, and don't usually torrent (streaming video on my computer over 3G is paaaiiiinful enough as it is).
Okay, yeah, PDANet is really, really great. I'm testing it out right now, and 3G is only a little slower than my DSL. Thanks SO MUCH for the recommendation, I was pulling my hair out trying to get fucking iPhoneModem to work.
