Consulting the Penny Arcade before a memory purchase.
I have 2 sticks of this in my machine right now. I now have 64bit Vista so I am looking at 1 of these. Will they play nicey nice? I know memory can be weird sometimes. Also, XP won't freak out will it? I have a dualboot setup right now.
Now, I know what you're thinking, don't be dumb, research it yourself, but you guys are so awesome and smart. you.
EDIT: Sorry, my mobo is an nForce 790i Ultra. 4 ram slots.
It should be fine. The timings are slightly different, but it should run at the same speed as your existing memory without much fuss. I think you will lose out on dual channel benefits by having an odd number of modules installed.

Excuse my idiotness, but what do you mean dual channel benefits?
Dual channel and triple channel refer to memory interleaving methods to increase bandwidth, most mobos support dual channel, i7 boards support triple channel, by generally speaking using pairs or treys of equally sized modules. Performance increase varies but while it's ideal to aim for dual channel if you can, if you're stuttering right now from a lack of memory then more memory will help even if it takes you down to single channel mode.
Alright thanks, I got this mostly because I have Vista now and want to take advantage of the extra RAM, and hopefully it will make my renders go faster. And maybe it will iron out the stutters I get in Crysis Warhead when turning around quickly.

It will not increase your FPS in Crysis. You may find that Crysis maps or other applications load faster since you will be using your page file less.
But going from 2GB to 4GB of RAM is pretty awesome.

Its not about FPS, I can get around 40 FPS all the time but I get stutters pretty frequently.

uh yea, Your memory is holding you back. oh well. If that doesn't work out let us know but, an E8400 is a beastly cpu and that setup shouldn't be studdering like that. You might check your drivers also.

I don't recommend mixing memory at all. It an essential part of your machine and too much passes through it.
What kind of graphics card are you using? Maybe instead of memory a new card is better spent money.
And too late I bought it.
