The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I am graduating from college soon, and as a studio arts major, it would be in my best interest to get my portfolio/resume on the interweb.
How much is a good price for web hosting/domain registration?
What is a good company to go through?
I have a web developer friend who will make the webpage, and I can take care of the designing, I just know nothing about hosting.
I need sufficient space for plenty of fairly large images. I doubt I will get much traffic, but I would like to be able to quickly upgrade if the need be.
(that long ass link is for 1&1) I've had them for about two years now and they are really reliable and really cheap. I think I have about 300GB worth of data for $60 a year.
It's not web hosting, it's just an opensource php template specifically designed for portfolio's and exhitions and stuff. It's incredibly easy to set up and update, and I think it has a very pleasing minimal aesthetic.
Why not just use blogger or wordpress for free? Not sure what you'll be hosting, but they have a gig or more of space and you can always just use photobucket or flickr or imageshack to host images if you have a lot of large sized files.
Just buy a $5-10 domain, point it at the free host and make a decent template and save the $50-70 in paid hosting every year.
...is extremely competitively priced for what you get and has a lot of features.
I'm with you, i hated 1&1 as well. And when i tried to cancel, they still charged me anyways, even though i called them and they told me it was canceled. I had to call my credit card company and tell them it was an unauthorized charge and to not accept any further attempts from them to charge my card.
I've liked 1&1 so far, expensive but reliable. But then that's 1and1.co.uk and I think the .com is effectively a completely different entity to all intents and purposes.

Yeah, I've used 1&1.co.uk for a few personal things and we use it for our business hosting here at work. We're regulary getting 99.999% uptime over the year and we've got a very generous amount of webspace / bandwidth for what we actually pay.
SporkAndrew on
The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin

For hosting I went through godaddy.com
